Eddie Gephardt of Swarthmore matched par with a 71 at the tough Penn Oaks Golf Club where Chester County meets Delaware County along Route 202 to capture the boys title in the Harry Hammond Invitational Aug. 1st.
The Harry Hammond Invitational is named for the director of golf and co-owner at Penn Oaks and a legendary figure in this area when it comes to supporting and promoting junior golf. Hammond ended a long association with the West Chester University golf program with the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season.
Pretty sure there is a scholarship aspect to the Harry Hammond Invitational in which participants are invited to submit an essay. The people who run the event award scholarships to players who plan to pursue a college education.
Unlike most Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour events, there are only 16-to-18 divisions for the boys and girls. Pretty sure you need to have had a high finish in a Philly Junior Tour event at some point in the last couple of seasons to get an invitation to tee it up in the Harry Hammond Invitational.
Gephardt got it going over the 6,577-yard, par-71 Penn Oaks layout as he made a birdie at the third hole, went back-to-back with birdies at six and seven and added birdies at 11 and 18 on the incoming nine. Gephardt had nine pars on his scorecard.
Noah Moelter, who capped his scholastic career at Central Bucks South by finishing in a tie for sixth place in last fall’s PIAA Class AAA Championship at Penn State’s White Course, finished two shots behind Gephardt in second place with a solid 2-over 73.
Moelter made birdies on the seventh, 10th and 18th holes and had 11 pars on his card. Moelter rattled off seven straight pars in between the birdies at the 10th and 18th holes while touring the back nine at Penn Oaks in 2-under 34.
Moelter will join the program at Saint Joseph’s later this month.
Radnor senior Shaun Mazzalupi finished in third place with a 6-over 77 as he made birdies at the fifth, 12th and 16th holes and had six pars on his card. Mazzalupi is a two-time PIAA Class AAA Championship qualifier.
Harrison Brown of Villanova took fourth place with a 78 and Boyertown junior Chase Dillman and Nathan Smith of Chestertown, Md. shared fifth, each registering a 79.
Tyler Debusschere, who capped an outstanding scholastic career at Strath Haven by earning a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Championship last fall, headed a group of six players who rounded out the top 10 in the division as each landed on 80 and finished in a tie for seventh place.
Rounding out the group tied for seventh place were recent Pope John Paul II graduate and Stonewall looper Jack Brennan, Michael Dignazio, who helped Tower Hill School capture the Delaware state team crown as a junior in the spring, West Chester East senior Thomas Baschoff, Evan Gephart of Camden-Wyoming, Del. and Nolan Corcoran of Lansdale.
Brooke Graham, who capped an outstanding scholastic career at Boiling Springs by finishing in sixth place in the PIAA Class AA Championship last fall, captured the top spot in the girls 16-to-18 division with a solid 5-over 76 over a Penn Oaks layout that measured 5,927 yards for the girls.
Graham, who will join the program at Kutztown later this month, made a birdie at the fourth hole and had 11 pars on her scorecard.
Downingtown West junior Rachel Schuda finished up her round with a birdie at the 18th hole and had six pars on her card as she earned runnerup honors with a 90.
Cierra Griffith of Pottstown had five pars on her card as she finished a shot behind Schuda in third place with a 91.
Rounding out the field in the 16-to-18 division was Carly Kuminka of Mickleton, N.J. as she finished in fourth place with a 105.
