Boyertown junior Chase Dillman appeared ready for the imminent start of the scholastic golf season as he carded a 4-over-par 75 to claim the top spot in the 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Tour stop at Raven’s Claw Golf Club in Limerick Aug. 16th.
Dillman made birdies at the eighth, 12th, 14th and 15th holes and had eight pars on his scorecard over a par-71 Raven’s Claw layout that twice hosted a Symetra Tour event, the developmental tour for the LPGA now known as the Epson Tour.
Twin Valley senior Shayne O’Doherty, who’s been doing some looping at Stonewall this summer, had 10 pars on his card, including eight straight to finish his round, as he earned runnerup honors among the older guys with a 79.
Devin Carpenter of Philadelphia had nine pars on his card as he finished in third place with an 89.
Rounding out a short field in the 16-to-18 division was Brandon Carrigan of Warminster as he finished in fourth place with a 99.
Archmere Academy sophomore Michael Liu made a birdie on the eighth hole and had 12 pars on his scorecard as he matched Dillman’s 4-over 75 to take top honors in the 13-to-15 division.
The scholastic season in Delaware for Liu, a Garnet Valley resident, is in the spring. Liu was coming off a victory in the Philly Junior Tour stop at Indian Spring Golf Course in Marlton, N.J. five days earlier.
Mason Stephan of Collegeville had seven pars on his card as he claimed runnerup honors among the younger guys with an 86. Scott Cunningham of Wayne had six pars on his card as he took third place with an 89.
Jimmy Warmkessel of Malvern took fourth place with a 90, Matthew Futuyma of West Bradford was fifth with a 102 and Gavin Schraegle of Phoenixville was sixth with a 103.
Jason Romano of Norristown took seventh place with a 112 and Braydon Holland of Haverford rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division as he finished eighth with a 121.
Heidi Wegscheider, a recent Oley Valley graduate, made birdies on the first, seventh and ninth holes and had six pars on her scorecard as she earned a Philly Junior Tour victory in the 16-to-18 division with an 84. Wegscheider is joining the program at Moravian University.
Upper Merion junior Alyssa Schuebel had five pars on her card as she rounded out a short field in the 16-to-18 division by finishing in second place with an 89.
Pretty good chance Schuebel will be back at Raven’s Claw for the opening round of the District One Class AAA Championship in October. The top players from the opening day at Raven’s Claw head down Ridge Pike for the final round of the district championship at Turtle Creek Golf Course.
Fortress Chryst of Wescosville was the lone entry in the 13-to-15 division and she made a par on the 13th hole on her way to a 108.
After opening with a double bogey at the first hole, Rithvik Nimma of Newtown made birdies at the fourth and seventh holes and parred the rest as he bested the field of nine-holers with an even-par 36.
Logan Turner of Berwyn and Bobby Stefanski of Newtown Square shared second place as each finished three shots behind Nimma with a 3-over 39. Turner made a birdie on the eighth hole and had five pars on his card and Stefanski matched Turner’s birdie at eight and had four pars on his card.
Rayan Shah of Newtown saw his streak of five straight victories in the coed 12-and-under division snapped at five as he finished a shot behind Turner and Stefanski in fourth place with a 40.
Sebastian Leone of Wayne and Henry Sokol of Villanova shared fifth place, each posting a 41, and Jack Sokol finished a shot behind his twin brother Henry in the battle for low Sokol and was alone in seventh with a 42.
Rounding out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division were three players -- Eric Cunningham, another member of Wayne’s Team Cunningham, Sam Whitehouse of Pottstown and Jack Gilbert of Bryn Mawr – tied for eighth place, each recording a 46.
