Episcopal Academy sophomore Freddy Hartmann, a Devon resident, got it into red figures with a 2-under-par 70 at Brookside Country Club in the heart of Pottstown to earn a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour victory in the 13-to-15 division Aug. 5th.
The Caddy Tournament at the Old Course at Stonewall, not all that far from Pottstown, was that day and I can vouch for how hot it was, although I made a lot more swings than the Philly Junior Tour kids did at Brookside.
Hartmann’s game heated up in the middle of his round as he followed up a birdie at the sixth hole by going back-to-back with birdies at nine and 10. Hartmann had 14 pars on his scorecard, grinding out eight straight pars to finish off his round.
Tyler Harris of Cinnaminson, N.J. made birdies on the first, fourth, sixth and 14th holes and had nine pars on his card as he finished four shots behind Hartmann in second place with a solid 2-over 74.
Luke Daniels of Devon, Daniel Ross of Harleysville and Jackson Lane, another Cinnaminson, N.J. guy, finished in a tie for third place, each landing four shots behind Hartmann with a 78.
Daniels made a birdie at the 16th hole and had 10 pars on his card, seven of those pars on the incoming nine, as he toured the back at Brookside in even-par 36. Ross had 12 pars on his card, opening his round with seven straight pars. Jackson Lane made back-to-back birdies at the fifth and sixth holes and had nine pars on his card.
Owen Ciesielka of West Chester took sixth place with an 80, Ty Sheftic, a sophomore on the Wissahickon golf team, was seventh with an 81, and Brooks Bernabei, a sophomore at The Hill School and a Lancaster resident, and Max Davis of Newtown Square finished in a tie for eighth place, each posting an 82.
Bernabei had a bit of a home-course advantage since Brookside is basically in the backyard of The Hill and is the home course for the Blues.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division were Ryan Kelly of Harleysville and Harry Neilly of Villanova as they finished in a tie for 10th place, each tallying an 84.
Chase Dillman, a senior on the Boyertown golf team, continued his run of strong play this summer, as he matched par at Brookside with a 72 as he claimed a Philly Junior Tour victory in the 16-to-18 division.
Dillman, coming off a Philly Junior Tour victory four days earlier at Kimberton Golf Club, made back-to-back birdies at the ninth and 10th holes, added a third birdie at 14, and had 13 pars on his scorecard.
Pearson Wolfe of Haddon Heights, N.J. and Nick Linkchorst, a senior on the West Chester Rustin golf team, finished in a tie for second place among the older guys, each signing for a 79.
Wolfe made birdies at third, 10th and 14th holes and had six pars on his card. Linkchorst, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, made a birdie at the 10th hole and had 11 pars on his card.
Dillman’s teammate at Boyertown, William Swartley, a junior, and Marshall Kain, who wrapped up his scholastic career at Malvern Prep last fall, finished in a tie for fourth place, each registering an 81.
Ian Yoo of Blue Bell took sixth place with an 82 and the trio of Colin Fanning of Gap, Evan Fulton, a junior at Malvern Prep and an Exton resident, and Owen J. Roberts junior Brody Calle finished in a tie for seventh place, each recording an 84.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division was Noah Brand of Newtown Square as he finished in 10th place with an 87.
Sarah Lester-Stranick of Lewes, Del. had five pars on her scorecard, four of them on Brookside’s incoming nine, as she captured a Philly Junior Tour victory in the girls 16-to-18 division with an 89.
Andi Jones of Glenside rounded out a short field in the 16-to-18 division as she had six pars on her card to finish a shot behind Lester-Stranick in second place with a 90.
Kirsten Weiss of Oreland made pars on the second and 18th holes as she finished at the top of the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division with a 101.
Marietta Hartmann, another member of Devon’s Team Hartmann, made a par on the 17th hole as she rounded out a short field in the 13-to-15 division by finishing in second place with a 105.
Gavin Lane, of Team Lane out of Cinnaminson, N.J., continued his summer roll as he bested the field of nine-holers, making a birdie on the third hole and finishing with three pars on his scorecard on his way to a 5-over 41.
Four days earlier, Gavin Lane captured the title in the Philly Junior Tour’s 12-and-under Championship at McCall Golf Club.
Grayson McCann of Downingtown had four pars on his card, including three straight pars on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes, as he earned runnerup honors with a 43 that left him two shots behind Gavin Lane.
Taimoor Naseem of Sinking Spring and John (Jack) Shea of Harleysville finished in a tie for third place, each carding a 45.
Naseem had three pars on his card and Shea made a birdie on the seventh hole and added a par at six.
Graeme Day of West Chester took fifth place with a 47, Charlie Sears of Wilmington, Del. and Joseph Charpentier of Schwenksville shared sixth, each posting a 48 and Jack Kolmer of Wayne was eighth with a 50.
Rounding out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division were Samuel Karas of Blue Bell and Connor Masulis, playing close to his Pottstown home, as they finished in a tie for ninth place, each registering a 52.
