Nathan Smith of Chestertown, Md. got it going on the front nine at Garrisons Lake Golf Club in Smyrna, Del. and rode that momentum to a 2-under-par 69 that gave him a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour victory in blazing sunshine and high humidity Wednesday.
Smith made birdies on the second, fifth, sixth and 10th holes and had 12 pars on his scorecard as he finished at the top of the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division. The three birdies on the outgoing nine enabled Smith to tour the front nine at Garrisons Lake in 2-under 34.
Evan Gephart of Magnolia, Del. made birdies on the first, eighth and 14th holes and had nine pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors in the division with a solid 4-over 75.
Rudy Mench of Wilmington, Del. made birdies on the first, fourth and 17th holes and had eight pars on his card as he finished a shot behind Gephart in third place with a 76.
Jacob Gabbard of Lewes, Del. took fourth place with an 86 and Nicholas Heckman of Lincoln University was fifth with an 88.
Rounding out the field in the 16-to-18 division were Chris Calla of Harrisburg and Anthony Salenni of Magnolia, Del. as they finished in a tie for sixth place, each posting a 91.
Gus Stoltzfus, another entry from Lincoln University, earned a Philly Junior Tour victory in the 13-to-15 division as he made a birdie on the 16th hole and had seven pars on his scorecard on his way to an 82.
Gabriel Abalos of Washington Township, N.J. had six pars on his card as he finished in second place with an 85.
Matthew Hoopes of Wilmington, Del. had four pars on his card as he took third place with a 93.
Chad Hughey of Rehoboth Beach, Del. took fourth place with a 95 and Braydon Dolan of Springfield rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division as he finished in fifth place with a 99.
Only two girls teed it up in the girls divisions and Downingtown West junior Rachel Schuda made a birdie at the sixth hole and had six pars on her scorecard as she carded a solid 88 to earn a Philly Junior Tour victory in the 16-to-18 division.
Maia Alinskas of Millsboro, Del. had three pars on her card as she finished in second place in the 16-to-18 division with a 102.
Ruben Yoon of Wilmington, Del. bested the field of nine-holers as he finished up with a birdie at the ninth hole and had four pars on his scorecard on his way to a 4-over 40.
Ty Thompson of Devault and Declan Mayo of Chadds Ford shared runnerup honors, each recording a 43. Thompson made a birdie on the third hole and had two pars on his card and Mayo had three pars on his card.
Jia Yan of Malvern took fourth place with a 48, Jonathan Thomas of Landenberg was fifth with a 51 and Lucas Shank of West Chester and Zheng Yan, another member of Malvern’s Team Yan, finished in a tie for sixth, each registering a 53.
Rounding out the field in the coed 12-and-under division was Victor Wang of Hockessin, Del. as he finished in eighth place with a 58.
