Archbishop Carroll senior Matthew Hurchalla continued his recent run of strong play on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour with a victory at a stop at Meadia Heights Golf Club near Lancaster June 26th that was shortened by severe weather.
Hurchalla, a Wallingford resident, made a birdie on the sixth hole, his last hole of the day, that gave him an even-par 55 for 14 holes as he finished atop the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division. Starting on the 11th hole, Hurchalla rattled off 10 straight pars from 11 through two and finished with 12 pars on his scorecard.
Jake Johnson of Wayne also finished his round with a birdie at the sixth hole and had nine pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors with a 3-over 58.
Nick Belgrade of Wilmington, Del. took, third place with a 5-over 60 highlighted by birdies at the 14th and first holes and six pars.
J.P. Murray, another Wayne entry, took fourth place with a 63, Brandon Carrigan of Warrington was fifth with a 70 and Anthony Manzi of Aston was sixth with a 71.
Rounding out the field in the 16-to-18 division was Cooper Clemens of Harrisburg as he finished alone in seventh place with a 78.
A couple of Swarthmore guys, Declan Conner and Eddie Gephardt, finished 1-2, respectively, in the 13-to-15 division, the younger guys only getting in 11 holes before severe weather halted play.
Conner, who has been playing solid golf all spring, made a birdie on the 15th hole and had four pars on his scorecard on his way to a 5-over 49 that gave him the victory. Gephardt had seven pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors with a 6-over 50, a shot behind Conner.
Ben Mayer of Garnet Valley and Caiden Jordan of Rising Sun, Md. finished in a tie for third place, each landing on 11-over 55.
Mayer had four pars on his card while Jordan made a birdie on the on the 12th hole and added a par at 15.
Carter Appleby of Lititz and Ty Sheftic of Blue Bell finished in a tie for fifth place, each recording a 56.
Gus Stoltzfus of Lincoln University, Max Miller of Hershey and Gus Wolfe of Downingtown shared seventh place, each posting a 57.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division was Brooks Barnabei of Lancaster as he finished alone in 10th place with a 58.
Cierra Griffith of Pottstown claimed a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division with a 9-over 66 as the gals were limited to 14 holes by the onset of severe weather. Griffith made a birdie on the sixth hole and had six pars on her card.
Heidi Wegscheider, a recent Oley graduate, made a birdie on the 13th hole and had five pars on her card as she took second place with a 72. Hannah Kopac of State College had two pars on her card as she finished in third place with an 84.
Rounding out the field in the 16-to-18 division was Shayla Adams as she took fourth place with a 90.
Ty Thompson of Devault bested the field of nine-holers as he made pars on the fourth and ninth holes on his way to a 8-over 44.
A couple of Bryn Mawr guys, Jake Gilbert and William Thorkelson, held down the next two spots in the division as Gilbert made pars on the fifth and ninth holes to take second place with a 47 and Thorkelson made pars on the seventh and ninth holes to finish third with a 52.
William Hanrahan of State College took fourth place with a 53 and Samuel Karas of Blue Bell was fifth with a 54.
Rounding out the field in the coed 12-and-under division was Victor Wang of Hockessin, Del. as he ended up in sixth place with a 57.
