Ethan Cho of Ambler and Tim Peters of Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy in Boalsburg shared medalist honors among the boys in the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s Harry Hammond Invitational on a blazing hot Aug. 9th at Penn Oaks Golf Club where Delaware County meets Chester County on Route 202 below West Chester.
Hammond is the director of golf at Penn Oaks and has done more to support junior golf in the Philadelphia area than anyone ever.
There was no release on the Harry Hammond Invitational by the Philly Junior Tour, but in the past, boys and girls who have finished first or second in their age group in a Philly Junior Tour event in the last two years are invited to tee it up at Penn Oaks. There is also a scholarship element to the Harry Hammond Invitational with players invited to submit essays with scholarships to the college of his or her choice awarded.
Cho and Peters each carded a solid 3-over 74 to share the top spot among the boys. Unlike regular Philly Junior Tour events, the Harry Hammond Invitational has only a 16-to-18 division for boys and girls.
Gwendolyn Powell, a junior at North Pocono, and Hayley Ekert, a senior at North Penn, each carded a 9-over 80 to finish tied atop the leaderboard in the girls 16-to-18 division.
The results seem to indicate the tie was broken in the favor of Powell, but I’m not totally sure about that.
Cho made birdies at the fourth and 15th holes and had 12 pars on his scorecard in getting in at 3-over. Peters, who finished in a tie for sixth place in the PIAA Class AA Championship at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York County last fall, made birdies at the sixth and 14th holes and also had 12 pars on his card.
Michael Dignazio and Joseph Fargnoli finished in a tie for third place, each recording a 6-over 77.
Dignazio made a birdie on the 16th hole and had 11 pars on his scorecard with eight of those pars on the incoming nine at Penn Oaks as Dignazio turned in a 1-under 35 on the back nine. Fargnoli made birdies on the fourth, fifth, 12th and 18th holes and had six pars on his card.
Jake Shmonov, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier for Central Dauphin last fall, headed a group of five players tied for fifth place, each landing on 78.
Joining Shmonov at 7-over were Downingtown West senior Brady Manning, Conestoga senior Kyle Mauro, John Stevenson and Justin Forman.
Rounding out the top 10 in the boys division were two players -- William Aprahamian and Owen Wisner – who finished in a tie for 10th place, each signing for a 79.
Powell made a birdie on the ninth hole and had nine pars on her scorecard as she landed at the top of the leaderboard among the girls. Ekert had nine pars in a steady round as she matched Powell’s total.
Sophia DeSantis made a birdie at the 15th hole and had nine pars on her card to finish a shot behind Powell and Ekert in third place with an 81.
Cierra Griffith and Chloe Barton finished in a tie for fourth place, each posting a 90. Pennridge senior Taryn Shine rounded out the girls field as she finished in sixth place with a 94.
