The United States Golf Association started its men’s and women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championships as a nod to just how popular partner golf has become and because, well, it’s just so darn fun.
The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour introduced its first Junior Fourball Championship Tuesday at Saucon Valley Country Club’s Grace Course and while it wasn’t the most well-attended event of the season, it will gain in popularity after the players who did participate tell their friends how enjoyable it was.
Athen Sachar and Caden Blanchette needed four extra holes of a playoff with the pair of Tyler Hager and Joshua Suto to capture the victory in the 16-to-18 division after each team fired a sparkling 3-under 69.
Four more teams shared third place, each landing on 2-under 70. That group included Luke Watson and Luke Fazio, teammates on Spring-Ford’s golf team last fall, Owen Fahs and Chase Skrapits, Matthew Tressler and Andrew Maddock and Joe Smith and Thomas Young.
Garnet Valley seniors Nick Woods and Matt Pulcinella joined forces to match par with a 72 and shared seventh place with the tandem of Logan Rose and Billy Pabst.
Colin Drummond and Jake Leon were a shot behind the two teams tied for seventh place as they teamed up for a 1-over 73 that left them alone in ninth place. Owen Blazick and Raymond Joseph rounded out the top 10 among the older guys as they put together a 2-over 74 to end up alone in 10th place.
Matthew Ronca and Matt Vital – I know Vital is a Bethlehem kid and I’m guessing Ronca was also playing close to home at Saucon Valley – teamed up to make three birdies and match par with a 72 to finish atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division.
Justin Edwards and Trent Moyer had two birdies as they claimed runnerup honors with a 78.
The duos of Andrew Zang and Nicholas Vitale and Macade Knoblauch and Chase Dillman each posted a 79 as the teams finished in a tie for third place. Dylan Henry and Jackson Fryer rounded out the field among the younger guys as they registered an 80 to finish alone in fifth place.
Only two girls teams teed it up with the best score emerging from the 13-to-15 division as Meredith Finger and Reagan Garnsey – they’re both Delaware kids – teamed up to make two birdies on their way to a 5-over 77.
Gabrielle Courtney and Mollie Young made up the only entry in the 16-to-18 division and had a birdie on the scorecard on their way to an 82.
Closest-to-the-pin prizes were handed out with Dillman hitting it close at the 11th hole and Garnsey getting it in tight at the fifth hole to claim the respective boys and girls competitions.
