Mother Nature was bringing the heat Wednesday, but so was Springfield High junior Daniel Flaherty as he recorded six birdies on his way to a 4-under-par 67 at Marple Township’s Paxon Hollow Country Club to easily top the 13-to-15 field in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop.
On a sweltering day at one of Delaware County’s most popular public courses, Flaherty made birdies at the first, fourth, ninth, 13th, 15th and 16th holes to offset just two bogeys. Sounds like somebody is ready for the upcoming scholastic golf season.
Strath Haven junior Tyler Debusschere headed a group of three players who shared runnerup honors among the younger guys as each posted a solid 4-over 75. He was joined at that figure by Ethan Martin of North Wales and Noah Wallace of Elkton, Md.
Debusschere made birdies at the second, 10th and 11th holes and had 10 pars on his scorecard. Martin made birdies at the first, ninth, fourth and 13th holes and had six pars on his card. Wallace made birdies at the second, 13th and 16th holes and had 10 pars on his card.
Shaun Mazzalupi of Wayne finished alone in fifth place with a 76 and three more players – Alec Thiele of Philadelphia, Lannon Boyd of Radnor and Noah Corcoran of Lansdale – ended up in a tie for sixth place, each signing for a 77.
Owen Wise of Downingtown took ninth place with a 78 and J.P. Hoban of Havertown rounded out the top 10 as he finished alone in 10th place with a 79. That was 10 players from the younger 13-to-15 age group breaking 80. Pretty strong.
Recent Cardinal O’Hara graduate Thomas Larkin didn’t quite match Flaherty’s scintillating pace, but he made birdies at the first, fourth, 11th, 14th and 15th holes, five birdies in all, and had 10 pars on his scorecard as carded a 1-over 72 to capture a victory in the 16-to-18 division.
Owen Wisner of Reading made birdies at the first, seventh and 18th holes and had nine pars on his card as he finished two shots behind Larkin in second place with a 3-over 74. Evan Rosenstein of Plymouth Meeting rattled off three straight birdies at the eighth, ninth and 10th holes as he took third place with a 75. Rosenstein also had a birdie at the second hole, part of an even-par tour 35 of Paxon Hollow’s outgoing nine, and added a fifth birdie at the little downhill par-3 17th hole to close out his round.
There was a logjam at 5-over 76 as five players finished in a tie for fourth place, including a couple of Newtown Square guys, Joshua Murphy and Marshall Kain, Brendan Meagher of Swedesboro, N.J., Ryan Garvey of Media and Charlie Kerprich of Dresher.
Conor Watson of Malvern finished alone in ninth place with a 79 and Anthony Carson, playing close to his Broomall home, and Christopher DiRita of Drexel Hill rounded out the top 10 as they each registered an 80 to finish in a tie for 10th.
Gus Stoltzfus of Lincoln University birdied the fourth hole and had four pars on his scorecard as he bested the field of nine-holers with a 4-over 39.
There were no girls teeing it up in the 16-to-18 or 13-to-15 divisions at Paxon Hollow, but some of the girls in the coed 12-and-under division broke into the top 10, led by Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J. as she had four pars to earn runnerup honors, two shots behind Stoltzfus with a 6-over 41. It’s been a solid summer of golf for Liu on the Philly Junior Tour.
Another gal, Alaina Cooper of Broomall’s Team Cooper, had three pars as she earned a share of third place among the nine-holers with a 7-over 42. She was joined at that figure by Luka Fediukov of Downingtown, who had three pars, and David Nissen of Lower Gwynedd, who made a birdie on the second hole and had three pars.
Jackson Lane of Cinnaminson, N.J. took sixth place with a 43, Giulia Weisser of Reading was seventh with a 44 and Hannah Webb of Woolwich, N.J. and Alex DiGiacinto of Nazareth finished in a tie for eighth, each signing for a 45. Griffin Reach of Wallingford rounded out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division as he finished alone in 10th place with a 46.
