Callahan Harrell of York spotted the field a bogey at the first hole and then ripped off four birdies on the final eight holes of Huntingdon Valley Country Club’s Centennial Nine to capture the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour Championship for the coed 12-and-under division Wednesday.
Harrell had birdies at the second, sixth, eighth and ninth holes to make up for that opening bogey as he fired a scintillating 3-under-par 32 over the Centennial Nine layout. Harrell saved his best stuff for the biggest event on the calendar for the increasingly competitive nine-holers.
Another York entry, Philly Junior Tour regular Lawson Leeper, birdied the second and sixth holes and had five pars on his scorecard as he settled for runnerup honors with an even-par 35. Only six shots separated Leeper and the 11 players who chased home Harrell and made up the rest of the top-10 finishers.
Quinten Joiner of Millington, Md. won the third-place medal on the first hole of a playoff as he and Jason Mack of Delaware Water Gap each landed on 1-over 36.
Joiner was very consistent, making eight straight pars before a closing bogey at the ninth hole. Mack closed with a rush, making a birdie at the ninth hole at the end of a 1-under run through the final five holes of the Centennial Nine. Overall, Mack parred six of the nine holes.
Anthony Proud of Stroudsburg, Ian Larsen of Glenmoore and Declan Conner of Swarthmore finished in a tie for fifth place as each registered a 4-over 39 that left them three shots behind Joiner and Mack.
Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. and David Nissen of Lower Gwynedd finished in a tie for eighth place as each signed for a 5-over 40.
Ian Rotto of Kennett Square, Benjamin Mayer of Garnet Valley and Colby Komancheck of Royersford rounded out the top 10 as they ended up in a tie for 10th place, each carding a 6-over 41.
