The New Jersey Section PGA juniors came on strong to hand the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stars a 13.5-4.5 setback in the 15th Annual Jon M. Pritsch Cup, presented by Under Armour, which was held Friday at Philmont Country Club’s North Course in Huntingdon Valley.
The Jersey guys and girls were particularly dominant in the singles portion of the Ryder Cup-style event as they ran away with a 10-2 edge after the Philly Junior Tour’s standouts kept it within a point in the four-ball matches, New Jersey building a narrow 3.5-2.5 advantage. The results of each match were unavailable, but I do have winners and losers.
The teams are made up of the top point-getters from the respective Junior Tour’s wraparound 2020-2021 season. New Jersey retained the Jon M. Pritsch Cup, which it had held onto a year ago with a 12-6 victory at Forsgate Country Club’s Banks Course in Monroe Township, N.J.
Matthew Normand, the Lumberton, N.J. left-hander who has a really strong summer, and Pope John Paul II junior Luke Fazio had the best day among the Philly Junior Tour competitors.
Normand teamed with Conestoga junior Kyle Mauro to earn a four-ball victory over Devon Patel of Madison, N.J. and Ethan Engmann of Summit, N.J. Normand won a second point for the day with a singles victory over Patel. Engmann picked up a singles victory for New Jersey over Mauro.
Fazio teamed with Charlie Kerprich of Dresher to claim a four-ball victory over Jun Chun of Old Tappan, N.J. and Isaiah Williams of Flemington, N.J. Fazio then added a second point for the day with a singles victory over Williams. Chun captured a win over Kerprich in their singles match to salvage a point for New Jersey.
The wins for Normand and Fazio were the only singles victories for the Philly Junior Tour representatives.
Noah Wallace of Elkton, Md. and Aiden Farkas of Ardmore got the final half-point of the day for the Philly Junior Tour as they battled Harry Cohen of Wyckoff, N.J. and Arjun Caprihan of Warren, N.J. to a draw in their four-ball match. In the singles matches, Cohen defeated Wallace and Caprihan earned a decision over Farkas.
Three New Jersey teams swept both their four-ball match and their two singles matchups.
Richie Reck of Middletown, N.J. and Liam Pasternak of Morristown, N.J. earned a four-ball victory over Owen Wisner of Reading and Josh Baker of West Chester. In the singles matches, Reck got past Wisner and Pasternak knocked off Baker.
Priyam Nayak of Iselin, N.J. and Mihir Roperta of Cranbury, N.J. won their four-ball matchup with Strath Haven junior Tyler Debusschere and Ethan Martin of North Wales. Nayak prevailed over Debusschere and Roperta earned a decision over Martin in the singles matches.
New Jersey’s girls pair of Ava Lozito of Fairfield, N.J. and Vidhi Lakhawala of Kendall Park, N.J. claimed a four-ball victory over North Penn junior Halley Ekert and Kayley Roberts of Phoenixville. Lozito earned another point with a singles victory over Ekert, who was coming off a victory in last week’s Philadelphia Junior Tour Championship at Talamore Country Club. Lakhawala added a singles victory over Roberts.
Jon M. Pritsch was a talented junior golf who died tragically in May 1991 at the age of 17. The Jon M. Pritsch Memorial Fund has raised more than $200,000 and handed out more than 100 scholarships to junior golfers who intend to pursue a career in a golf-related field.
