Saint Joseph’s Ross Pilliod, a junior from Berks Catholic,
carded a pair of 2-under-par 70s to get a share of the top spot, but had to
settle for a runnerup finish in a scorecard playoff in the Matthews
Auto/Binghamton Intercollegiate, which concluded Monday at The Links at
Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, N.Y.
Pilliod’s 4-under 140 total over the 7,104-yard, par-72
Links at Hiawatha Landing layout was matched by Monmouth sophomore Nick Maff, a
Bethlehem Catholic product. Maff’s second round of 3-under 69 gave him the
tiebreaker edge on Pilliod, an occasional Stonewall looper when he’s not
playing tournament golf in the summer.
It also took a tiebreaker to determine the team champion as
St. Bonaventure and Lehigh finished tied for first at 10-over 586. It came down
to the best second-round score between the teams’ fifth player and the edge
went to the Bonnies. It is the second year in a row St. Bonaventure has won the
team title and the Bonnies won it last year via the same tiebreaker.
St. Bonaventure had shared first place after Sunday’s
opening round with St. Joe’s at 7-over 295, but only because Bonnies senior
Corey Long, a product of South Fayette, was disqualified for signing an
incorrect scorecard. That wiped out his 1-under 71 and added four shots to the
St. Bonaventure team total.
Long bounced back with an even-par 72 as the Bonnies posted
a 3-over 291 in Monday’s second round. Lehigh had a 1-over 289 to get a share
of first with the Bonnies before the tiebreaker did not go in favor of the Mountain Hawks.
Host Binghamton was two shots behind the top two in third at
288 after matching par with a final-round 288. Monmouth, led by Maff’s
individual victory, finished fourth at 592 after a final-round 295. The
University of Ottawa was fifth at 596 after a final-round 296.
Villanova, with rounds of 298 and 300, finished sixth at
598. The Wildcats finished a shot ahead of Saint Joseph’s, which fell back
after its opening-round 295 with a 304 for a 599 total. La Salle finished tied
for 14th with Long Island-Brooklyn in the 16-team field with rounds
of 305 and 313 for a 618 total.
Leading the way for St. Bonaventure was Danny Gianniny, a
freshman from Pittsford, N.Y. who had rounds of 72 and 71 to finish tied for
fourth at 1-under 143. Brent Morgan, a junior from Coal Grove, Ohio, finished
tied for 12th with a pair of 73s and a 2-over 146 total and Zach
Chaddock, a sophomore from Fillmore, N.Y. finished tied for 26th with
a pair of 75s and a 6-over 150 total.
It turned into an eventful two days for the Bonnies’ fifth
scorer, Nolan Dichter, a sophomore from Randolph, N.Y. When Long was
disqualified after Sunday’s first round, Dichter’s 75 became St. Bonaventure’s
fourth counter of the round. And his second-round 78 was one shot better than
Lehigh’s fifth score, giving the Bonnies the tiebreaker edge. His 153 total
left him tied for 38th.
Binghamton’s Ryan Rodriguez, a sophomore from Highland
Mills, N.Y., finished alone in third, a shot behind Maff and Pilliod with
rounds of 71 and 70 for a 3-under 141 total. Sharing fourth with St.
Bonaventure’s Gianniny was Hofstra’s Sean Cavanaugh, a graduate student from
Encino, Calif. who had rounds of 71 and 72 for a 1-under 143 total.
Villanova was led by Connor Daly, a sophomore from
Bronxville, N.Y., and senior Andy Butler, who starred scholastically at Manheim
Township. They were in the group tied for sixth at even-par 144. Daly added a
2-under 70 to his opening-round 74 while Butler
started off with a 1-under 71
Sunday and added a 1-over 73 in the second round.
Villanova coach James Wilkes threw a couple of freshmen into
the fray. Matt Barnes of Bethesda, Md. finished tied for 32nd with
rounds of 74 and 78 for an 8-over 152. Reb Banas of Winnetka, Ill. finished
tied for 64th with a pair of 79s for a 158 total.
Will Byrne, a senior from McLean, Va., struggled with rounds
of 82 and 84 that left him tied for 82nd at 166.
Michael O’Brien, a sophomore from West Chester, Ohio, backed
up Pilliod for Saint Joseph’s as he had rounds of 73 and 76 to finish tied for
18th at 5-over 149.
Freshman Wills Montgomery, a former Downingtown East
standout, had rounds of 73 and 77 to finish tied for 26th at 150.
Noah Henderson, a sophomore from Solana Beach, Calif., and sophomore Tommy
Lewis, a former Central Bucks East standout, were among the group tied for 69th
at 161. Henderson opened up with an 80 and added an 81 Monday while Lewis
followed up an opening-round 79 with an 82.
La Salle was led by Ron Fischang, a freshman from McKinney,
Texas, and freshman David Kim, a former Upper Dublin standout, both of whom
finished in the group tied for 32nd at 152. Fischang had a pair of
76s while Kim opened with a 74 and added a second-round 78.
Nick Gruber, a junior from Cincinnati, had rounds of 79 and
82 to finish tied for 69th at 161. Senior Brandon Raihl, a Conrad
Weiser product, had rounds of 85 and 77 to finish tied for 74th at
162 and Zaffar Sikkander, a freshman from Sri Lanka, had rounds of 76 and 87 to
finish 79th at 163.
