Episcopal Academy edged Haverford School by three shots
Wednesday at the Inter-Ac League mini-tournament hosted by Germantown Academy
at Bluestone Country Club to give the defending champion Churchmen a chance to at
least get a share of the title with the Fords in the final mini-tournament of
the season.
Senior Ashton Dunn carded a 1-over 37 to lead the way for
Episcopal, which finished with a 232 total. Haverford School was just three
shots behind at 235. The 4-1 day for the Fords leaves them atop the standings
at 22-3. Episcopal’s 5-0 sweep leaves it at 19-6.
The Churchmen host the final mini-tournament Monday at
Merion Golf Club’s West Course. They would need to finish first and get some
help from Malvern Prep and Penn Charter to get a share of the title with
Haverford School.
Malvern Prep finished third with a solid 238 total and Penn
Charter was fourth at 243. Penn Charter, which won the first mini-tournament of
the season on its home course at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, is in third
place at 15-10 and Malvern Prep is fourth at 14-11.
Host Germantown Academy finished fifth on its home course at
268 and is fifth in the standings at 5-20 and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy
finished sixth at 284 and is winless this season at 0-25.
Episcopal’s senior co-captain Jon Perry added a 2-over 38
for the Churchmen. Senior co-captain Cole Kemmerer and sophomores Case Hummer
and Jacob Zeng all came in at 39. Junior Michael Zeng was the final counter
with a 40.
Malvern Prep was led by junior John Updike, the 2016
Pennsylvania Junior Boys’ champion who matched par with a 36. It was a steady
round for Updike, who made seven pars and offset his lone bogey with a birdie.
Juniors Matt Civitella and Andrew Curran each carded a
3-over 39 and senior captain Matt Davis and senior Mike Hennigan each posted a
41. Senior Eric McLaughlin and junior Kevin Hagan each came in at 42 to tie for
the Friars’ sixth and final counter.
