They were not among the contenders in last week’s PIAA Class
AAA Championship at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York County, but it’s not
often you see two brothers make it to the state tournament.
But Caleb Ryan, a junior, and Joshua Ryan, a freshman, both
represented Norristown High and the Pioneer Athletic Conference in the PIAA
Championship. And a lot of very good players never made it that far.
Team Ryan was back at it in a Philadelphia Section PGA
Junior Tour stop Saturday at Linfield National Golf Club in western Montgomery
County, sweeping to titles in the 16-to-18 and 13-to-15 age groups.
Caleb Ryan, who finished tied for 19th at
Heritage Hills, had four birdies, three of them on the back nine, to match par
at the 6,365-yard, par-71 Linfield National layout with a 71 to capture the
16-to-18 victory by three shots.
Joshua Ryan, who finished tied for 23rd at
Heritage Hills, had five birdies, two on the front and three on the back, for a
2-under 69 that gave him the victory in the 13-to-15 division by a whopping 11
shots. He also earned low-Ryan honors by two shots with the best score turned
in by any of the boys who teed it up at Linfield National Saturday.
Nathan Pierce of Limerick was the runnerup to Caleb Ryan in
the 16-to-18 division with a 3-over 74 that included a birdie on the seventh
hole. Central League co-champion Will Horn, a senior at Lower Merion, and
Harriton’s Andrew Wallace shared third place, each carding a 5-over 76.
Griffin Foll of Yardley finished alone in fifth with a 78
and Cole Shew of West Chester and Nicholas Hano of Warrington shared sixth
place, each posting a 79. Joshua Brauer of Royersford finished eighth with an
80, Jack Hamilton of West Chester was
another shot behind Brauer in ninth with an 81 and Jack Herbine of Doylestown and Andrew Koh of Dresher rounded out the top 10
as they tied for 10th at 82.
Four players shared second place in the 13-to-15 division,
11 shots behind Joshua Ryan at 80, including Stephen Butler of Telford, Henry
Stone of Kennett Square, Darren Nolan of Glenside and Ethan Finkelstein of
Yardley.
Benjamin Saggers of West Chester finished alone in sixth
place with an 81. Saggers reached the final of the Golf Association of
Philadelphia’s Junior-Junior Championship last summer, falling to Joshua Ryan
in a hard-fought title match at Phoenixville Country Club.
Connor Gherghel of Orwigsburg and Keller Mulhern of Exton
finished tied for seventh, each posting an 83, and Stephane de Brechard of
Brooklyn, N.Y. and Winston Kelenc-Blank of Rumson, N.J. rounded out the top 10
as they ended up in a tie for ninth at 84.
Jessica Shao of Pottstown took top honors in the girls
16-to-18 division with a solid 80 that included a front nine of 38 and a pair
of birdies on the back nine. Katie Pupillo of Skippack was the runnerup with a
98.
Helen Shaw of Harleysville finished third with a 104 and
Elaine Loose of Malvern was fourth with a 113.
Just like the guys, the best score of the day among the gals
came out of the 13-to-15 division as Angelina Tolentino of Mount Laurel, N.J.
carded a 79 to capture top honors in the division. Tolentino, whose game has
really taken off this year, was rock solid down the stretch with seven straight
pars to finish her round that enabled her to break 80.
The Lu girls of Edison, N.J., Grace and Claire, had respective
rounds of 82 and 86 to claim second and third behind Tolentino. Riley
Quartermain, coming off a solid freshman season at Haverford, finished fourth
with an 87.
Leah Walter of West Chester finished fifth with a 93, Nicole
Yun of Limerick was sixth with a 100, Amanda Schuebel of King of Prussia was
seventh with a 104, Kathryn Kovatch of Gilbertsville was eighth with a 106 and
Kaitlyn Ferrer of Kennett Square was ninth at 111. Sophie Walter rounded out the
top 10 with a 119 and made it a pair of top-10 finishers in the division for
the Walters of West Chester.
Hunter Probst of Bear Creek fired a 12-over 47 to claim top
honors among the nine-holers, his first Junior Tour victory in the still young
2017-’18 wraparound season. Vanessa Newett of Gilbersville was the runnerup
with a 63.
