Michael Festa of Ambler and Cole Shew of West Chester went
shot for shot all weekend as the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour contested
a Junior Golf Scoreboard event in a visit to Berks County.
Festa captured top honors in the 16-to-18 division in a
match of cards with Shew after each carded a solid 2-over 73 over the
challenging 6,256-yard, par-71 Berkshire Country Club layout in Reading. Festa,
who birdied the par-4 eighth hole, had a 37 on the back nine, which gave him
the tiebreaker edge.
Shew, as chronicled in an earlier post, also had a 3-over 73
in winning top honors in the division Saturday at Chapel Hill Golf Course. That
gave him the series victory with a 146 total,
three shots better than Festa, who had a 76 at Chapel Hill.
Jack Hamilton of West Chester and Tyler Kipp of Reading
shared third place at Berkshire as each posted a 5-over 76. Jackson Paradee of
Dover, Del. finished fifth with a 78, Stephen Lorenzo of Lower Gwynedd was
sixth with an 80, William Tone of Moorestown, N.J. was seventh with an 82 and
Plymouth Whitemarsh freshman Dylan Gooneratne was eighth with an 83.
Bryan Donato of Chester Springs finished ninth with an 85
and Conrad Benford of Parker Ford and Jackson Stinebaugh of New York, N.Y.
rounded out the top 10 as they shared 10th place, each carding an
87.
The best round of the day at Berkshire was carded by Brett
Ostroski of Shavertown, who had four birdies, going back-to-back on 10 and 11,
in a 1-over 72 that gave him the victory in the 13-to-15 division. Elijah
Ruppert of Fleetwood and Luke Watson of Royersford finished tied for second at
7-over 78.
Garnet Valley sophomore Jake Sokalsky finished fourth with a
79, Henry Stone of Kennett Square and Hamilton McNaughton of Lancaster shared fifth place
at 80 and Chase Stephano of Radnor was seventh with an 81.
Jackson Reid of Bryn Mawr finished eighth with an 82,
Benjamin Saggers of West Chester was ninth with an 83 and Darren Nolan of
Glenside rounded out the top 10 with an 85.
Connor Gherghel of Orwigsburg finished 12th at
Berkshire with an 88, which, combined with the 77 he posted Saturday at Chapel
Hill, gave him the top spot in the 13-to-15 division for the weekend series
with a 165 total. Nolan, who added an 85 at Chapel Hill to his 85 at Berkshire,
was the runnerup at 170 and Saggers, who opened with an 89 at Chapel Hill,
finished third at 172.
Olivia Schwandt of Wilmington, Del. birdied the par-4 15th
on her way to an 82 that gave her a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division.
Schwandt was the only 16-to-18 girl to tee it up Sunday, but her round was the
best among the girls of all ages.
Victoria Kim of West Chester took top honors in the 13-to-15
division with an 86. Kim was even-par on Berkshire’s par-5s. Julia Li of Hockessin,
Del. and Kathryn Kovatch of Gilbertsville shared second place, each posting a 118.
Nicholas Gross of Downingtown capped a dominant weekend in
Berks County as he rattled off six straight pars to open his round and finished
with a 4-over 40 to take top honors among the nine-holers. Gross won the
division Saturday at Chapel Hill with a 3-over 37. He was the only nine-holer
to tee it up both days, but his 77 total for the series would have been tough
to top.
The Gooneratne girls of Plymouth Meeting finished second and third, respectively, as Rhianna carded a 49 and older sister Fiona posted a 59.
