Penn State, coming off a share of the Windon Memorial
Classic title with host Northwestern, made it two straight team wins with an
impressive 31-under-par 833 that gave the Nittany Lions a nine-shot victory in
the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Blackthorn Club at The
Ridge in Jonesborough, Tenn.
Penn State capped off its winning effort with a 4-under 284
in Sunday’s final round over the 7,147-yard, par-72 Blackthorn layout. The
Nittany Lions’ 31-under total was the second-lowest in program history. They
had seized control of the tournament with a spectacular 16-under 272 in
Saturday’s second round after opening with an 11-under 277 in Friday’s opening
round.
Kent State, with a final round of 5-under 283, was the
runnerup at 22-under 942. Louisville was another shot behind Kent State in
third at 21-under 843 after a final round of 4-under 284. Missouri, which
ripped off a 15-under 273 in Saturday’s second round, finished fourth at
18-under 846 after matching par in the final round with a 288.
Coastal Carolina finished fifth at 12-under 852 after a
final round of 2-under 286 and Tennessee was a shot behind Coastal Carolina in
sixth at 11-under 853 after a final-round 291.
Villanova, battling it out with scholarship programs, was
last in the field of 15 with rounds of 298, 294 and 312 for a 40-over 904
total.
Penn State was led by junior J.D. Hughes, the Carlisle
product who won the Pennsylvania Amateur at White Manor Country Club last
summer. Hughes had rounds of 66, 68 and 68 to finish second at 14-under 202,
three shots behind individual champion Hayden Buckley, a senior at Missouri
from Belden, Miss.
Penn State’s Charles Huntzinger, a junior from Duluth, Ga.
who was the defending champion in the Bank of Tennessee, finished third at
11-under 205. Huntzinger had surged into contention with an 8-under 64 in the
second round, a big part of the Nittany Lions’ 16-under team round. He finished
up with an even-par 72 to end up three shots behind Hughes.
Senior Cole Miller, a former Northwestern Lehigh standout,
finished tied for 12th at 5-under 211 as he sandwiched a 1-under 71
in the second round with a pair of 2-under 70s. Miller, who won the NCAA
Washington Regional individual title last spring, played in both the Amateur
Championship across the pond and in the U.S. Amateur at Riviera Country Club
and Bel-Air Country Club over the summer.
Junior Ryan Dornes, a former Manheim Township standout,
finished tied for 25th at 1-under 215 after a final-round 74. Dornes
contributed a 3-under 69 to that sizzling second-round team total.
Ryan Davis, a sophomore from Berkeley Heights, N.J.,
finished tied for 65th at 224 after a final-round 75. Daniel
Martinez, a freshman from Austin, Texas competing as an individual, finished
tied for 57th at 222 after a final-round 77. Martinez opened strong
with a 3-under 69 Friday.
Penn State goes into the midseason break having regained
some of the swagger the Nittany Lions showed in reaching the NCAA Championship
at Rich Harvest Farms last spring. They did that with Dornes sidelined with an
injury.
Missouri’s Buckley matched Huntzinger’s 8-under 64 in
Saturday’s second round after opening with a 68. He finished up with a 5-under
67 Sunday to run away and hide with a 17-under 199 total.
North Carolina-Wilmington’s Pat Cover, a senior from Huntersville,
N.C., fired a 6-under 66 in the final round to get a share of fourth with host
East Tennessee State’s Jack Rhea, a freshman from Jonesborough, Tenn., at
10-under 206. Rhea, playing in his home town, finished up with a 1-under 71
after an impressive 7-under 65 in Saturday’s second round.
Louisville’s Simon Zach, a junior from the Czech Republic,
and Kent State’s Chase Johnson, a senior form Barberton, Ohio, finished tied for
sixth at 9-under 207. Zach had opened up with rounds of 68 and 65 before
cooling off in the final round with a 74. Johnson had opened with a pair of 68s
and finished up with a 1-under 71 Sunday.
Senior Andy Butler, a teammate of Penn State’s Dornes on
Manheim Township’s 2012 PIAA Class AAA team champion, and Connor Daly, a
sophomore from Bronxville, N.Y., have been Villanova’s two best players this
fall and they were again in the Bank of Tennessee.
Butler, who had a pair of 1-under 71s the first two days,
slipped back with a final-round 75, but finished tied for 37th at
1-over 217. Daly, who had finished tied for 28th in the Bank of
Tennessee as a freshman a year ago, struggled in the final round with a 78 to finish
tied for 59th at 223. He had opened with a 1-over 73 and an even-par
72 in rounds 1 and 2, respectively.
Matt Barnes, a freshman from Bethesda, Md., finished tied
for 75th at 228 after a final-round 78, Reb Banas, a freshman from
Winnetka, Ill., finished 82nd at 238 after a final-round 83, and Zach
Egermayer, a senior from Glen Brook, N.J., finished 83rd at 244 after a
final-round 81.
