As I write this, Penn State is already off the golf course
after teeing it up in the first round of The Landfall Tradition in Wilmington,
N.C., which got under way Friday. Some of the top teams in the country are in
the field for the Landfall and the plan is to post after each round, but it’s
worth taking a quick look back at the Nittany Lions’ second team win of the
fall in the Lady Blue Hen Invitational, which concluded Sunday.
Penn State, No. 38 in the latest Golfstat rankings, finished up strong with a 1-over-par 289 over
the 6,180-yard, par-72 Rehoboth Beach Country Club layout for a 25-over 889
total, 10 shots better than tournament host Delaware.
The Blue Hens, led by individual champion Ashley Dingman, a
junior from Fairfield, Calif., had a solid final round of 3-over 291 for an 899
total.
Penn State opened up with rounds of 302 and 298 in
Saturday’s double-round to share the lead after Day 1 with Harvard at 600. Harvard
fell back a little with a final-round 304 to finish third at 904.
James Madison finished fourth at 905 after a final-round
298, Towson was fifth at 917 after a final-round 300 and Penn was sixth in the
nine-team field at 922 after a final-round 306.
Penn State was led by junior Jackie Rogowicz, a two-time
District One champion at Pennsbury who fired a final round of 3-under 69 to
finish two shots behind Dingman at 2-over 216.
Junior Cara Basso, a Villa Maria Academy product who claimed
the Women’s Golf Association of Philadelphia Match-Play Championship last
summer, finished tied for fifth at 5-over 221 after matching par in the final
round with a 72. Basso has had a strong fall campaign for Denise St. Pierre’s
Nittany Lions.
Sophomore Madelein Herr, a former Council Rock North
standout, finished tied for eighth at 223 after she sandwiched a 75 in the
middle round with a pair of 2-over 74s. Junior Lauren Waller, the 2014 PIAA
Class AAA runnerup at Canon-McMillan, finished alone in 17th at 230
after a final-round 77.
Kamerine Taylor, a junior from Dublin, Ohio, finished tied
for 26th at 234 after a final-round 77. Competing as an individual,
sophomore Megan McLean, a product of Voorhees High in South Jersey, finished
tied for 18th at 231 after a final-round 79.
It appears the foursome of Rogowicz, Basso, Herr and Waller
have solidified their spots in St. Pierre’s starting five. The battle for that
fifth spot, which can be so crucial, looks like it will continue on into the
spring.
Dingman was an impressive individual winner in leading
Delaware, the reigning Colonial Athletic Association champion, to a runnerup
finish in its Lady Blue Hen Invitational. She opened with a pair of 1-over 73s
Saturday before her impressive final-round 68 gave her a 2-under 214 total.
Backing up Dingman was a strong foreign contingent that made
up the rest of the Delaware lineup.
Thitaree Sakulbunpanich, a freshman from Thailand, finished alone
in seventh place at 6-over 222 after a final round of 2-over 74. Sakulbunpanich
also matched par in the second round with a 72.
Valentina Mueller, a junior from Switzerland, finished tied
for 12th at 228 after a final-round 74, Ariane Klotz, a sophomore
from New Caledonia, finished tied for 29th at 235 after a final-round
75 and Josefina Davila-Fernandez, a sophomore from Peru, was tied for 50th
at 249 after a final-round 82.
Harvard was led by Belinda Hu, a freshman from San Ramon,
Calif. who finished alone in third in the individual standing at 3-over 219.
She had a strong start with rounds of 71 and 72 in Saturday’s double-round
before finishing up with a 76.
James Madison’s Lauren Gomez-Ruiz, a senior from Spain, and
Towson’s Alix Lowe, a junior from Farmingdale, N.Y. finished tied for fifth at
5-over 221. Gomez-Ruiz matched par in the final round with a 72 while Lowe, who
posted a pair of 73s in Saturday’s double-round, finished up with a 75.
Penn was led by three players – Christina Park, a sophomore
from San Diego, Calif., Chelsea Liu, a freshman from China, and Selena Zeng, a
freshman from Oak Brook, Ill. – all of whom landed in a group tied for 18th
at 231. Park finished up with a 75, Liu carded a final-round 79 and Zeng had
three rounds of 77.
Also for the Quakers, Tiffany Yau, a sophomore from Porter Ranch,
Calif., finished tied for 24th
at 233 after a final-round 77, and Rina Jang, a freshman from Briarcliff
Manor, N.Y., finished tied for 33rd,
also carding a final-round 77.
