One of the interesting up-and-comers on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour this summer has been Valerie Danby of Avondale.
Danby is a Class of 2031 competitor, an 11-year-old youngster playing against older girls in the 13-to-15 division. That should make her a seventh-grader, still two years away from playing high school golf.
The precocious Danby’s talent was on display Monday at Newark Country Club in Newark, Del. as she carded an 8-over-par 74 in a round shortened to 17 holes by, I’m guessing, an approaching thunderstorm, which we were getting on a nearly daily basis earlier this week, as she claimed her fifth Philly Junior Tour victory of the season in the 13-to-15 division.
Danby made a birdie on the fourth hole and eight pars on her scorecard.
Danby was chased home by Kiera Post of Lincoln University as she rounded out a short field in the 13-to-15 division with an 11-over 77.
Post had nine pars on her card and probably would have been in the low 80s, a noticeable improvement from some of her earlier Philly Junior Tour results.
The 15-year-old Post is one of three Post kids competing on the Philly Junior Tour this summer, along with sister Miranda and brother Landon. They are the children of the husband-wife team at the helm of the Delaware men’s and women’s golf teams.
Patty Post is the director of both the men’s and women’s teams and Brendon Post is the head coach of the men’s team. Looks like they’re passing their passion for the game on to their kids.
There was just one entry in the 16-to-18 division and Brooke Burge of Middletown, Del. had three pars on her scorecard on her way to a 92.
The best score among the guys also emerged from the 13-to-15 division as Jack Lubley of Gladwyne made birdies on the fourth, sixth, 12th and 15th holes and had seven pars on his scorecard to finish at the top of the leaderboard in the division with a 5-over 76.
Frank Kunze, a sophomore on the Garnet Valley golf team, made birdies on the fourth and sixth holes and had six pars on his card, opening his round with three straight pars, as he earned runnerup honors among the younger guys with a 79 that left him three shots behind Lubley.
Luke Peyton of Frankford, Del. made a birdie on the 14th hole and had 10 pars on his card, including a string of four straight pars from the second through the fifth holes, as he finished a shot behind Kunze in third place with an 80.
Jack Tunnell of Lewes, Del. took fourth place with an 83, Joel Vogt of Rising Sun, Md. was fifth with an 85 and the trio of Beck Jafarieh of Wilmington, Del., Jack Venne of Moorestown, N.J. and Pushkar Vatsavayi of Marlton, N.J. finished in a tie for sixth place, each signing for a 90.
A couple of Wilmington, Del. guys, Robert Rittereiser and Matthew Pilcher, finished in ninth and 10th place, respectively, Rittereiser tallying a 91 and Pilcher recording a 92.
Rounding out the field in the 13-and-15 division was Landon Wolfe of Middletown, Del. as he finished in 11th place with a 94.
Michael Links of Swedesboro, N.J. and Parker Alivernini of Wilmington, Del. shared the top spot in the 16-to-18 division as each posted an 81.
Links made a birdie on the sixth hole and had seven pars on his scorecard, all of them on the incoming nine at Newark, including four straight pars to close out his round. Alivernini made a birdie on the sixth hole and had eight pars on his card.
Lorenzo Viterbo of Landenberg made a birdie on the fourth hole and had six pars on his card as he finished two shots behind Links and Alivernini in third place with an 83.
Will Shannon of Wayne and Tyler Buzby of Bear, Del. shared fourth place, each registering a 92, and K.J. DeSantis rounded the field in the 16-to-18 division as he finished sixth with a 94.
James Wilson of Wilmington, Del. bested the field of boys 12-and-under nine-holers as he made a birdie on the sixth hole and had four pars on his scorecard on his way to a 3-over 38.
Brody Rollins of Milton, Del. had six pars on his scorecard, including a run of five straight pars from the third through the seventh holes, as he finished a shot behind Wilson in second place with a 4-over 39.
Charlie Sears of Wilmington, Del. made birdies on the second, fourth and sixth holes and had a par at five as he took third place with a 40, a shot behind Rollins.
Victor Wang of Hockessin, Del. and Jonathan Thomas of Landenberg shared fourth place, each signing for a 41, Michael Perry of Wilmington, Del. took fifth with a 42, Jackson Jones of Bryn Mawr was seventh with a 46 and Thayer Boyd of Kennett Square was eighth with a 48.
A couple of Wilmington, Del. guys, Caelen Gillen and Luca Saienni, rounded out the top 10 in the boys 12-and-under division as they finished in a tie for ninth place, each recording a 51.
Mia DeCarlo of Glen Mills made a birdie on the sixth hole and had five pars on her scorecard, including four straight pars to open her round, as she finished at the top of the leaderboard in the girls 12-and-under division with a 3-over 38.
Aashi Chakraborty of Kennett Square rounded out a short field in the girls 12-and-under division as she finished in second place with a 52.
