Penn Charter is tough at home in sweeping Inter-Ac invitational; Malvern Prep maintains hold on first place

Penn Charter took full advantage of its home-course advantage to pull out a victory in an Inter-Ac League invitational hosted by the Quakers at Huntingdon Valley Country Club Wednesday.

Behind medalist Jake Dittus, a senior who carded a 1-over-par 36 over the par-35 Huntingdon Valley layout, Penn Charter put together a 193 total that gave the Quakers a two-shot edge over league leader Malvern Prep. Jake Dittus was the individual medalist overall for the day.

Sophomore Casey Felter added a 2-over 37 and senior Holden Hummel posted a 4-over 39 to back up Jake Dittus for the Quakers. Sophomore Dean Kaiser recorded a 5-over-40 and Penn Charter coach Jim Sullivan had his pick between sophomore Teddy Davey or eighth-grader Jasper Dittus for his fifth counter as each signed for a 41.

The 5-0 sweep in the Penn Charter Invitational enabled the Quakers to move to .500 for the season with a 10-10 mark that has them in fourth place.

Malvern Prep’s second-place finish helped the Friars strengthen their hold on the top spot in the Inter-Ac standings with two of the league’s six invitationals left.

Freshman Davis Conaway, who leads the league’s regular-season individual standings, was solid again with a 2-over 37 in leading the way for Malvern Prep.

The Friars finished with a 195 total, just a shot ahead of their closest pursuer in the Inter-Ac race, The Haverford School.

The second-place finish at Huntingdon Valley gives Malvern Prep a 17-3 mark. Haverford School, which posted a 196 at Huntingdon Valley to finish in third place, sits in second place with a 14-6 mark.

Backing up Conaway for Malvern Prep was the trio of junior Marshall Kain, sophomore Mac Traynor and freshman Thomas Ploszay, each of whom recorded a solid 3-over 38. Senior Will Aprahamian and sophomore Brody Bell each carded a 41, so Malvern Prep coach Gary Duda could take his pick on which to make his fifth counter.

Leading the way for Haverford School was Sean Curran, who registered a 3-over 38. J.P. Hoban, Henry Gowen and Alex Nemo each posted a 39 to back up Curran.

Episcopal Academy finished in fourth place in the Penn Charter Invitational with a 205 total. The Churchmen were led by junior Hunter Stetson, the reigning Bert Linton Inter-Ac individual champion who signed for a 2-over 37.

Defending Inter-Ac League champion Germantown Academy was another four shots behind Episcopal Academy in fifth place at Huntingdon Valley with a 209 total. The Patriots were led by junior Ajeet Bagga, who carded a 5-over 40.

Germantown Academy remained in third place in the league standing with a 13-7 mark. Episcopal Academy is in fifth place behind Penn Charter with a 6-14 mark.

Springside Chestnut Hill Academy finished last of the six teams in the Penn Charter Invitational with a 223 total and remained winless for the season with an 0-20 mark.
