On a team field with talented youngsters, it was Malvern Prep’s veterans who led the way as the Friars edged defending Inter-Ac League champion Germantown Academy by a shot to sweep to the team victory on their home course at Waynesborough Country Club in Easttown Township Thursday.
Senior Will Aprahamian and junior Marshall Kain each carded a solid 1-over-par 36 over a par-35 Waynesborough layout to help Malvern Prep put together a team score of 186, just a shot clear of Germantown Academy, which posted a team total of 187.
The 5-0 day in the Malvern Prep Invitational, the third of the six invitationals that comprise the Inter-Ac’s regular season, enabled the Friars to put a nose in front in the team standings at the halfway point.
Malvern Prep, GA and perennial Inter-Ac power Haverford School entered the Malvern Prep Invitational in a tie for first place, but the sweep at Waynesborough left the Friars with a 13-2 mark. Germantown Academy fell back into second place, right on Malvern Prep’s heels with a 12-3 record.
The Haverford School finished third at Waynesborough, just three shots behind Germantown Academy with a 190 total and the Fords are lurking in third place in the Inter-Ac standings with an 11-4 record.
Backing up Aprahamian and Kain for Malvern Prep was talented freshman Davis Conaway, who recorded a 2-over 37. Conaway sits atop the Inter-Ac’s individual points race for the season with three invitationals to go.
Sophomore Michael Henry added a solid 3-over 38 for the Friars and sophomore Mac Traynor gave them a fifth player under 40 with a 4-over 39 that rounded out the scoring for Malvern Prep.
And Malvern Prep needed to be that good because GA was close behind. The Patriots were led by junior Ajeet Bagga, who posted a 1-over 36.
Haverford School was led by senior Rory Nesbitt, who signed for a 1-over 36 as the Fords remained very much in the hunt for an Inter-Ac crown.
Episcopal Academy finished two shots behind Haverford School in fourth place in the Malvern Prep Invitational as the Churchmen ended up with a 192 total.
Episcopal Academy was led by the individual medalist for the day, junior Hunter Stetson, who matched par at Waynesborough with a 35. Stetson captured the Bert Linton Inter-Ac individual title a year ago at Bluestone Country Club.
Penn Charter finished in fifth place with a 199 total at Waynesborough, which enabled the Quakers to stay just in front of Episcopal Academy in the team standings with a 5-10 mark. The Churchmen are in fifth place with a 4-11 record.
Springside Chestnut Hill Academy remained winless for the season after finishing in sixth place at Waynesborough with a 216 total.
