Ethan Martin of North Wales and Strath Haven junior Tyler Debusschere were the two best players in the field in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Medford Lakes Country Club on a steamy Wednesday at Medford Lakes, N.J.
Martin and Debusschere had both matched par a day earlier at Northampton Valley Country Club, but had to settle for a share of second place when Derek Johnson of Mountain Top fired a fairly spectacular 2-under 68 to claim the win in the 13-to-15 division.
Martin matched par for the second day in a row with a 71 as the best score of the day again emerged from the 13-to-15 division. Debusschere couldn’t quite deny Martin the victory among the younger guys, but Debusschere was right there again, carding a solid 1-over 72 to claim runnerup honors.
Martin made birdies at the fifth, eighth and ninth holes while touring the outgoing nine at the par-71 Medford Lakes layout in 3-under 33. Martin had 14 pars on his scorecard. Debusschere, who capped a pandemic-interrupted sophomore season by helping the Panthers take the team title in the Central League Championship at Downingtown Country Club, had birdies at the second, 11th and 16th holes while registering 11 pars.
Havertown’s J.P. Hoban, the winner of last summer’s Golf Association of Philadelphia Junior-Junior Championship at West Chester Golf & Country Club, birdied the 15th hole and had nine pars on his scorecard as he took third place with a 79.
Brandan Tyhanic of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. took fourth place with an 81 and Alec Thiele of West Deptford, N.J. and Tommy Marshall of Marlton, N.J. shared fifth, each landing on 82.
David Fiorita of Jamison and Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J. finished in a tie for seventh place, each signing for an 86 and Liam McFadden of Bryn Mawr and Zachary Freed of Linwood, N.J. rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division as they shared ninth place, each registering an 87.
Matthew Normand of Lumberton, N.J. birdied the sixth and 18th holes and had 12 pars on his scorecard on his way to a 3-over 74 that gave him medalist honors in the 16-to-18 division. Normand has not passed up many opportunities to compete this summer, playing a ton of golf, the vast majority of it very solid golf.
Brendan Meagher of Swedesboro, N.J. and Brady Manning of Downingtown shared second place, each carding a 4-over 75. Meagher birdied the 17th hole and had 12 pars on his scorecard, including six straight pars to finish out the outgoing nine at Medford Lakes. Manning had an equally steady round, registering 14 pars.
Jack Orr of Medford, N.J. took fourth place with a 79 and Matthew Dietl of Glenmoore and Rocco Sanfelice of Woolwich, N.J. finished in a tie for fifth place, each landing on 80. Nathan Guertler of Merchantville, N.J., the Junior Tour’s 13-to-15 division Player of the Year in the wraparound 2019-2020 season, finished alone in seventh place with an 82.
Lee Gerber of Evesham Township, N.J. and Luke Turse of Hainesport, N.J. shared eighth place, each posting an 83. Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division was Matthew Adler of Medford, N.J. as he finished alone in 10th place with an 88.
The best score among the girls also emerged from the 13-to-15 division as Hannah Puc of Marlton, N.J. birdied the seventh hole while touring the outgoing nine at Medford Lakes in even-par 36 and had 11 pars on her way to a 6-over 77.
Yasmeen Muhammad of Barnegat, N.J. birdied the 18th hole while posting a 109 that gave her runnerup honors. Sophia Blair of Williamstown, N.J. rounded out the 13-to-15 division field as she finished in third place with a 111.
Another Player of the Year from the 2019-’20 season, Olivia Strigh of Hammonton, N.J. in the girls 16-to-18 division, continues to play well this summer as she made birdies at the 12th and 17th holes while registering a 2-over 37 on Medford Lake’s incoming nine and had nine pars in a 79 that gave her a victory among the older girls.
Grace Klements of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. had three pars as she earned a runnerup finish with an 86. Central Bucks East junior Nina Harris ahd four pars on her way to a 94 that enabled her to finish in third place.
Sophia Chesner of Moorestown, N.J. took fourth place with a 100 and Ella Miller of Lumberton, N.J. rounded out the 16-to-18 field as she finished in fifth place with a 106.
Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. got off to a fast start with a birdie at the first hole and had five pars on his scorecard as he bested the field of nine-holers with a 3-over 39.
Thomas Carpenter of Bristol had four pars as he claimed runnerup honors with a 41 and Anthony Primo of Marlton, N.J. birdied the eighth hole and had three pars as he took third place with a 43.
Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J. took fourth place with a 45, Judd Fletcher of Moorestown, N.J. was fifth with a 46 and Onyu Park of Blue Bell was sixth with a 47.
Hannah Webb of Woolwich, N.J. finished in seventh place with a 52, Jacob Shachar of Sewell, N.J. was eighth with a 53, Saleem Kazmi, another Moorestown, N.J. entry, was ninth with a 55 and Kwanyun Loo, another Cherry Hill, N.J. entry, rounded out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division, finishing alone in 10th place with a 56.
