Luke Weller of Reading kicked off the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s wraparound 2020-2021 season Thursday by carding a solid 2-over-par 73 at Coatesville Country Club to claim a victory in the 16-to-18 division.
Weller had eight pars on the front nine and made birdies on the 11th and 17th holes on his way back to the clubhouse at the par-71 Coatesville layout.
Oxford senior Joseph Madden made back-to-back birdies at the 10th and 11th holes and had nine pars on his scorecard as he earned runnerup honors with a 5-over 76, three shots behind Weller.
Mike Boyce and Jacob Boyce of Team Boyce out of Elkton, Md. headed a group of four players tied for third place, each carding a 78. Joining Mike Boyce and Jacob Boyce at 7-over were Boyertown senior John Engle, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, and Jacob Leon of Downingtown.
Joe Niblick of Royersford finished alone in seventh place with an 80. Radnor High senior Rishi Khanna and Jim Kelly of Slatington shared eighth place, each carding an 81.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division was Madden’s Oxford teammate, Rocco Giannangeli, who finished alone in 10th place with an 82. Like Madden, Giannangeli is also a senior.
Drew Clark of Kennett Square had a birdie on each side as he opened a new Junior Tour season with a victory in the 13-to-15 division with a 3-over 74.
Sean Surowiec of West Chester had four birdies on his card as the claimed runnerup honors with a 6-over 77. Luke Fazio of Schwenksville finished strong, going even-par on his last five holes to end up two shots behind Surowiec in third place with a solid 79.
Evan Rosenstein of Plymouth Meeting took fourth place with an 80, Ethan Martin of North Wales was fifth with an 81, Anthony Carson of Broomall was sixth with an 83, Brendan Reilly of Doylestown was seventh with an 86 and Jake Blackmore of Pottstown was eighth with an 88.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division were Alistair Demko of Hershey and Josh Baker of West Chester, both of whom posted an 89 to finish in a tie for ninth place.
Sarah Lawrie of Eagleville got the new Junior Tour season off to a winning start as she had three pars, one on the front nine and two more on the incoming nine, on her way to a 90 that gave her the top spot in the girls 16-to-18 division.
Suzie Ahn of Paoli had two pars on her last nine holes as she earned runnerup honors with a 92. Elizabeth O’Connell of Downingtown made pars on the seventh and 15th holes as she finished a shot behind Ahn in third place with a 93.
Paige Damon of Manchester rounded out the 16-to-18 field as she finished in fourth place with a 105.
A couple of Exton girls, Silvana Gonzalez and Mia Pace, matched the 90 put up by Lawrie, as they shared the top spot in the 13-to-15 division. Gonzalez had three pars and a birdie on her card while Pace also had three pars and notched a pair of birdies.
Julia McCloskey of Princeton Junction, N.J. birdied the par-3 12th hole and had two pars on her way to a 98 that left her in third place with a 98. Brynne Mushlin of Berwyn rounded out the 13-to-15 field as she finished in fourth place with a 118.
Carson Holmes, playing not far from his Thorndale home, birdied the 485-yard, par-5 15th hole and had three pars as he bested a very competitive field of nine-holers with a 5-over 41 to get off to a fast start in the new wraparound season.
Lawson Leeper of York had a birdie at the 11th hole as he finished a shot behind Holmes in second place in the coed 12-and-under division with a 42. Ian Larsen of Glenmoore was three shots behind Leeper in third place with a 45.
Three players – Ian Rotto of Kennett Square, Avery O’Neill of Romansville and Ravi Khanna, another member of Bryn Mawr’s Team Khanna – finished in a tie for fourth place, each registering a 47, two shots behind Larsen.
Four more players rounded out the top 10 in the division as Lannon Boyd of Radnor, Gus Stoltzfus of Lincoln University, Alaina Carson of Broomall’s Team Carson, and Miles McGinty Lititz each signed for a 49 to end up in a tie for seventh place.
