Still trying to catch up on a busy week of golf all over the place. I’ll get to the State College Junior Open eventually, but I wanted to wrap up the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Riverview Country Club first. And I do plan to put together a post on the U.S. Women’s Amateur, which has produced tremendous drama at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md. If you get a chance, check out two of the rising stars in women’s golf: Australian Garbriela Ruffels, the Southern California senior who is trying to repeat, and Rose Zhang, still a year away from starting her college career at Stanford, in Sunday’s scheduled 36-hole final.
Pennsbury senior Ryan Rearden really got it going in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Riverview Country Club in Easton Thursday, making seven birdies, including three straight on the front nine, as he fired a sparkling 3-under-par 69 to cruise to the victory in the 16-to-18 division.
Lower Merion senior Adam Chen birdied the first hole and finished with four in his round as he claimed runnerup honors with a 4-over 76. Jack Graboski of Harleysville had a birdie on each side, the last one at the 325-yard, par-4 17th hole, as he grabbed third place with a 5-over 77.
Ethan Finkelstein, Rearden’s teammate with the Falcons, who were the runnerup to Strath Haven in the District One Class AAA team chase last fall, finished fourth with a 79. Finkelestein wrapped up his scholastic career last fall.
Connor Cunningham of Dresher took fifth place with an 81, Will Locovare of Warrington was sixth with an 82 and Seamus Leonard of Blue Bell was seventh with an 83.
Tyler Swartz of Hummelstown finished in eighth place with a 91 and Kenneth Kreitz of Harleysville rounded out the 16-to-18 field as he ended up ninth with a 92.
Anthony Carson of Broomall had three birdies on the front nine at Riverview on his way to a 4-over 76 that left him atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division.
Harriton sophomore Cyrus Parvizi opened his back nine with five straight pars and birdied the 18th hole as he finished two shots behind Carson in second place with a 78. Evan Eichenlaub of Bethlehem birdied the seventh hole on his way to a 79 that left him in third place.
Thomas Young of Center Valley took fourth place with an 85, Benjamin Patterson of Narberth was fifth with an 88 and Daniel Cronan of Penn Valley was sixth with a 93. Justin Edwards of Northampton rounded out the 13-to-15 field, posting a 102 to finish in seventh place.
Grace Sanborn of Easton made birdies at the ninth and 12th holes as she signed for a 90 that gave her a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division. Emma Schotsch, a senior at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, had seven pars as she finished a shot behind Sanborn in second place with a 91.
Harriton senior Niosha Parvizi of Gladwyne’s Team Parvizi birdied the 12th hole on her way to a 92 that enabled her to finish in third place. Meredith Beyer of Avondale rounded out the 16-to-18 field as she posted a 97 to finish in fourth place.
Hayley Ekert of Fairview Village was the lone entrant in the 13-to-15 division and had three pars on her way to a 92.
Anthony Proud of Stroudsburg and Jason Mack of Delaware Water Gap each had six pars on his scorecard as they had matching 3-over 39s to share top honors in the coed 12-and-under division.
Jake Grossman of Elkins Park made a par on the 285-yard, par-4 fifth hole as he took third place with a 48. Carter Hippauf of Quakertown rounded out the field of nine-holers as he finished in fourth place with a 51.
