Mario Ventresca III of Blue Bell had five birdies in an even-par 72 that gave him a victory in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour event held Tuesday at the Steel Club, a Donald Ross classic in Hellertown.
Ventresca needed to be good because he had three players chasing close behind as Brandywine Heights senior Elijah Ruppert, who finished in a tie for third in the PIAA Class AA Championship last fall, Spring-Ford senior Luke Watson and Luke Spangler of Fredericksburg finished in a tie for second, each carding a 1-over 73, a shot behind Ventresca.
Jake Shmonov of Harrisburg finished alone in fifth place with a 78.
A couple of members of the La Salle team that made a perfect run through the Catholic League and finished third in the PIAA Class AAA team chase last fall, junior Darren Nolan and senior Corey Haydu, headed a group of four players tie for sixth place, each posting a 79. Haydu was the runnerup to Norristown’s Josh Ryan in the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Junior Boys’ Championship earlier this summer at The 1912 Club.
Joining Nolan and Haydu at 7-over were Stephen Cain of Yardley and Luke Corcoran of Lansdale.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division was Kyle Resuta of Royersford, who signed for an 82 to finish alone in 10th place.
Scott Hughes of Ambler matched Ventresa’s even-par 72 to take the top spot in the 13-to-15 division. Hughes was steady all day with a birdie and 16 pars on his scorecard.
Thomas Young of Center Valley had five birdies and was even-par on the front nine as he carded a 3-over 75 to earn a runnerup finish. Charles Feraco of Furlong took third place with a 77.
On the girls side, Ashley Ea of Perkasie birdied the 13th hole in registering a 7-over 79 that gave her the win in the 16-to-18 division.
Emma Shelby, playing close to her Hellertown home, and Grace Sanborn of Easton shared runnerup honors as each posted an 84.
Evelyn Wong of Macungie finished her round with seven straight pars as she claimed her second straight Junior Tour victory with an 8-over 80 that led the way in the 13-to-15 division. Wong topped the division in Monday’s stop at Brookside Country Club.
Audrey Reese of Richboro birdied the second hole on her way to an 89 that gave her a runnerup finish. Julia McCloskey of Princeton Junction, N.J. took third place with a 92.
Hannah Puc of Marlton, N.J. finished in fourth place with a 99 and Nina Harris of Furlong was fifth with a 103.
Jason Mack of Delaware Water Gap had three pars in a 10-over 46 as he bested the field of nine-holers. Rocky Corrigan of Haverford and Callahan Harrell of York shared runnerup honors as he each posted a 49.
Daniel Zimmerman of Phoenixville and Anthony Proud of Stroudsburg finished in a tie for fourth place, each signing for a 51. Brady Kelly of Warrington took sixth place with a 52, Nathaniel Beckelman of Yardley was seventh with a 55 and Casey Baltzer of Langhorne was eighth with a 62.
The Steel Club stop also offered divisions for college men and women and Austin Lauver of Strasburg took advantage of the opportunity by making six birdies, two on the front nine and four more on the back, as he won the men’s 17-to-24 division with a 2-over 74.
Matt Fleming, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a senior at Council Rock South in the fall of 2018, was the runnerup to Lauver with a 78.
Gillyoung Koh, who played her high school golf at Marple Newtown, was the long entry in the women’s 17-to-24 division and she made four pars on the front nine on her way to a 90.
