Jordan Weisman of Malvern and his fellow Philadelphia
Section PGA Junior Tour competitors dodged the raindrops Monday at Bent Creek
Country Club in Lititz, Lancaster County in a Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA
Championship qualifier.
Weisman had four birdies in a 1-under-par 70 at Bent Creek
to head a group of 14 boys who earned a ticket to the local qualifier for the
44th Boys Junior PGA Championship, which tees off July 30 at Keney Park Golf
Course in Hartford, Conn. The top finishers in the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA
Championship July 1 at The Springhaven Club will advance to one of the top
national events for junior golfers.
Weisman’s 70 gave him the top spot in the 16-to-18 division
as well as in the overall 13-to-18 scoring. Of the 14 boys who punched their
ticket to Springhaven, 11 came from the 16-to-18 division and three more from
among the younger guys in the 13-to-15 division. The cut fell at 7-over 78.
Jake Maddaloni, a key member of Haverford School’s Inter-Ac
League championship team as a sophomore last fall, and Austin Barbin of the
Elkton, Md. golfing Barbins shared second place in the 16-to-18 division, each
matching par with a 71.
Derek Answini of Pittston took fourth with a 2-over 73 and Tyler
Kipp, a Class AAA East Regional qualifier as a junior at Muhlenberg last fall,
was fifth with a 74.
Steve Lorenzo, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior at La
Salle last fall, headed a group of four players tied for sixth at 4-over 75. He
was joined at that figure by Luke Thompson of Huntingdon, Nikita Romanov of
Wilmington, Del. and Evan Barbin, another member of Team Barbin from Elkton,
Md.
Jacob Waskowitz of Richboro and Tyler Zimmer of Haverford
each carded a 77 to finish in a tie for 10th.
Graham Calhoun of Lititz secured the final berth out of the
16-to-18 division in the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship with a 78.
That left him in a tie for 12th with Colby Hook of Selbyville, Del.
Hook had secured a ticket to Springhaven by finishing in a tie for seventh in
another qualifier Sunday at Pine Meadows Golf Club in Lebanon.
Connor Strine of Lancaster had three birdies, including one
on the 17th that gave him the tiebreaker edge on Luke Corcoran of
Lansdale, as he carded a 3-over 74 to take the top spot in the 13-to-15
division.
Corcoran had four birdies as he matched Strine’s 74,
although he settled for second in the scorecard playoff. Strine and Corcoran
both qualified for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship.
The only other competitor in the 13-to-15 division to punch
his ticket to Springhaven was Jack Davis of Newtown Square. Davis had two
birdies in a 7-over 78 to finish third in the 13-to-15 division.
Nicholas Ciocca of Berwyn took fourth with a 79, Graham
White of West Chester was fifth with an 83 and Sawyer Marten of East Petersburg
was sixth with an 84.
Andrew Bilson of Lititz finished seventh with an 86, Tyler
Kenneson of Exton was eighth with an 88 and Zachary Antao of Chadds Ford and
William Huntley of Lansdale rounded out the top 10 as they each posted an 89 to
finish tied for ninth.
It was a regular Junior Tour stop for the girls and the coed
12-and-under nine-holers. The local qualifier for the 44th Girls
Junior PGA Championship, which tees off July 9 at Keney Park, will be held June
20 at Bellewood Country Club.
Amanda Gerrish, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a sophomore at
Hershey last fall, captured the victory in the girls 16-to-18 division as she
had three birdies in an 81.
Kathleen Mark, who helped Episcopal Academy capture its
second straight Inter-Ac League crown this spring to wrap up her sophomore season,
was the runnerup with an 86. Mark birdied the fifth hole and finished up with
back-to-back pars.
Katherine Lapinsky of Lancaster birdied the third hole in a
93 that left her alone in third place. Clare Gimpel, a Class AAA East Regional
qualifier in each of her first two years at Mount St. Joseph, was a shot behind
Lapinsky in fourth place with a 94.
Emily McAninch of Mechanicsburg had two birdies on the front
nine and three pars in her round as she carded an 88 to top the field in the
13-to-15 division, her fourth victory of the year. Molly Gregor of North Wales
had two birdies in a three-hole stretch as she nearly caught McAninch, settling
for runnerup honors with an 89.
Tristan Groff of Lancaster and Makensy Knaub of York shared
third place, each posting a 96. Taylor Hicks of Dallastown took fifth place
with a 98.
J.P. Hoban of Havertown had two pars in a 10-over 43 that
bested the field of nine-holers. Colton Orris of Hershey picked up a par on the
second hole on his way to a 51 that gave him runnerup honors.
Luke Fallon of Reading recorded a 4 on the sixth hole
that helped him take third place with a 55. Drew Wilson of Lancaster was fourth
with a 56.
