The Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Caddie Tournament
dates back to 1928, but like a lot of events on the GAP schedule, the addition
of a Women’s Flight is a relatively new development.
Melissa Landis, a junior on the Jefferson golf team in her second
season as a looper at The ACE Club, made the biggest splash at Monday’s Caddie
Tournament, firing a 2-over-par 74 at Foxchase Golf Club in Stevens, Lancaster
County to capture top honors in the Women’s Flight.
There were only two competitors in the Women’s Flight and
the other was Landis’ Jefferson teammate and fellow ACE Club looper Kinley Lingenfelter,
a junior from Rochester, Ind. And yeah, they had fun out there while playing
some pretty good golf.
Landis’ 74 matched the low round of the day as Noah Sim, a
16-year-old looper at Commonwealth National Golf Club, and Brandon Cassidy, who
is a bag-toter at Doylestown Country Club, each carded a 2-over 74 to claim
their respective age groups among the guys.
If Jefferson isn’t ringing a bell, it is technically the
East Falls campus of Thomas Jefferson University after the merger of
Philadelphia University with Thomas Jefferson University. If you’re really old,
like me, it was once known as Philadelphia Textile.
The 74 matched the low career round for the 20-year-old
Landis, a Philadelphia resident who once posted a 74 while playing scholastic
golf for Nazareth Academy.
Landis made back-to-birdies at the 12th and 13th
holes at Foxchase to highlight the round.
Her approach with a 54-degree wedge at the 270-yard, par-4
12th left her with a 10-foot birdie try that she converted. At the
105-yard, par-3 13th, her pitching wedge finished three feet from
the hole and she knocked that putt in.
“Normally, my driver is the strength of my game,” Landis
told the GAP website. “I like that club a lot and since we play longer courses
during our (collegiate) seasons, I had a lot of wedges in.”
Lingenfelter posted a solid 83 to earn runnerup honors in
the Women’s Flight.
Sim’s 74 enabled him to finish ahead of the pack in the
18-and-under division. His round featured a birdie at the 337-yard, par-4 fifth
hole, where he punched a 5-iron approach to 10 feet and made the birdie putt.
Sim is in his second year as a caddie at Commonwealth National.
A couple of Larkins from Llanerch Country Club, Michael and
Thomas, each landed on 79 to share second place in the division, five shots
behind Sim.
Andrew Kiddie of Applebrook Golf Club took fourth with an
84, Sim’s fellow Commonwealth National looper, Blake Barklage, was fifth with
an 86 and Ryan Jackson of Chester Valley Golf Club was sixth with an 88.
The 20-year-old Cassidy finished strong, going 2-under on
the back nine with a 35, to card his 74, which gave him top honors in the 19-and-20
division.
Philip James of Bluestone Country Club was just two shots
behind Cassidy in second place with a solid 4-over 76. Christopher Knox of
French Creek Golf Club and Jack LaRosa of the Union League Golf Club at
Torresdale shared third place, each posting a 77.
Llanerch’s Vincent Lucchesi and Marcus Janinek of Talamore
Country Club finished in a tie for fifth at 80 and another Llanerch looper,
Austin Farinella, and French Creek’s Mark Amadio shared seventh place after each
signed for an 85.
Pat Donaldson of Tavistock Country Club fired a solid 4-over
76 to land atop the field in the 21-to-52 division that might have been the
most competitive bracket.
Nicolas McCook of Chester Valley and Mike Petruccelli of the
Union League Golf Club at Torresdale finished a shot behind Donaldson in a tie
for second, each carding a 5-over 77.
Tom Crawford Jr. of the Philadelphia Cricket Club and Kyle
Hutnik of Lehigh Country Club shared fourth place, each posting a 78. Joe
Rochelle of Lookaway Golf Club was alone in sixth place with a 79.
Jon Hersey, another Cricket Club entry, and Josh Keyser of
Saucon Valley Country Club finished in a tie for seventh at 81. Rudy Peralta of
the Cricket Club finished alone in ninth place with an 82 and Mike Siddall of
Tavistock rounded out the top 10 as he finished alone in 10th place
with an 83.
Paul Bilous of Lehigh Country Club won the 55-and-over
division with an 83, four shots better than runnerup Mark Patterson of the
Union League Golf Club at Torresdale. And if you think 55 and older is too old
to be looping, think again.
Bill Kindt of Saucon Valley took third place with an 88, Bob
Quigley of The ACE Club was fourth with an 89 and David Taylor of Llanerch was
fifth with a 95.
Caddies must be regular loopers at their club for 30 days
prior to the event and may not have playing privileges at any Member Club to be
eligible for the Caddie Tournament.
