Colby Hook of Selbyville, Del. had already earned a ticket
to the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship, so maybe the pressure was off
a little for him in Tuesday’s qualifier at Maple Dale Country Club in Dover,
Del., the fourth of five such qualifiers.
Regardless, Hook fired a solid 1-under-par 71 at Maple Dale
to head a field of Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour standouts, eight of
whom did earn a spot in the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship, which
tees off July 1 at The Springhaven Club.
The top finishers at Springhaven will earn a trip to the 44th
Boys Junior PGA Championship, one of the top national junior events which tees
off July 30 at the Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Conn.
Hook had four birdies to capture the top spot in the
16-to-18 division and in the overall 13-to-18 scoring. All the qualifiers for
the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship came out of the 16-to-18
division.
Plymouth-Whitemarsh junior Dylan Gooneratne, matched par
with a 72 to finish a shot behind Hook in second place. Gooneratne had 11 pars
and had a 2-under 34 on the outgoing nine.
Harriton senior Andrew Wallace, who finished 15th
in the PIAA Class AAA Championship last spring, was a shot behind Gooneratne in
third place with a 1-over 73. Wallace finished strong with a couple of pars and
a birdie.
Michael Bozzi of Newtown Square took fourth with a 75,
Episcopal Academy junior Chad Kemmerer was fifth with a 76, Garnet Valley
senior Jake Sokalsky was sixth with an 81 and Spencer Frawley of Clayton, Del.
was seventh with an 83.
The cutoff for a ticket to Springhaven came at 84 and Jack
Ryan of Landenberg and Ethan Kuhlkin of New York City got the last two spots as
they finished tied for eighth, making the cut on the number.
Jackson Debusschere of Wallingford rounded out the top 10 in
the 16-to-18 division as he finished alone in 10th place with an 85.
Zachary Antao of Chadds Ford had four pars and a birdie to
top the field in the 13-to-15 division with an 89. Graham White of West Chester
bracketed his round with pars at the first and last holes as he was the
runnerup with a 91.
Noah Kim of Royersford had a 100 that included a birdie at
the second hole to finish third.
Mount St. Joseph junior Clare Gimpel, a Class AAA East
Regional qualifier in each of her first two years at the Mount, put together a
solid 80 that was highlighted by 10 pars and a birdie at the fourth hole as she
captured the victory in the girls 16-to-18 division. Gimpel helped Mount St.
Joe’s capture the District One Class AAA team crown last fall.
Stef Bonini, coming off a solid sophomore campaign at Notre
Dame this spring, also birdied the fourth hole and had three pars in her round
of 86 as she was the runnerup to Gimpel. Bonini finished in a tie for fourth in
the Inter-Ac League Championship last month at French Creek Golf Club.
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting’s Team Gooneratne was
the only entry in the 13-to-15 division and her 84 gave her the victory.
Gooneratne opened her round with seven straight pars.
The Philadelphia Girls Junior PGA Championship will be held
Thursday at Bellewood Country Club. The top finishers will earn a trip to the
44th Girls Junior PGA Championship, which tees off July 9, also at
Keney Park in Hartford, Conn.
Austin Dostal of Harbeson, Del. was the lone entry in the
coed 12-and-under division and carded a 52 for nine holes for his second Junior
Tour victory of the season.
