It was the last chance to earn a starting time in next
week’s Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship Tuesday at Indian Valley
Country Club and Maxwell Rubin of Marlton, N.J. made sure he punched his ticket
as he headed a group of 23 qualifiers with 3-over-par 75.
Rubin had three birdies on the front nine to capture top
honors in the 16-to-18 division and had the best score in the overall 13-to-18
scoring. Of the 23 qualifiers for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA
Championship, which tees off Monday at The Springhaven Club, 18 came from the
older 16-to-18 division while five players advanced out of the 13-to-15
division.
The top finishers at Springhaven will represent the
Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour at the 44th Boys Junior PGA Championship,
which tees off July 30 at the Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Conn.
Andrew Koh of Dresher, Evan Drummond of Exton, Brendan Bauer
of Hilltown and Shane Lawler of Malvern shared second place as each carded a
4-over 76, a shot behind Rubin. Lawler had already earned his ticket to
Springhaven in the qualifier at Avalon Golf Club earlier this month and wasn’t
included among the 23 qualifiers Tuesday at Indian Valley.
Jason Rieger of Collegeville and Hayden Greer of Moorestown,
N.J. finished in a tie for sixth at 5-over 77. Martin Cryan of Forty Fort was
alone in eighth place with a 79.
Strath Haven senior Nick Cardow carded an 80 and will be
playing close to his Wallingford home Monday at Springhaven. He headed a group
of five players who finished tied for ninth at 80 that also included Milo
Jezzeny of Furlong, David Merz of Swarthmore, Nick Martin of Audubon and Corey
Haydu of Doylestown.
Reese Watson of Mechanicsburg and Samuel Barsh of Blue Bell
finished in a tie for 14th, each posting an 81. Brett Gulati of
Collegeville and Jack Farkas of Ardmore were another shot behind Watson and
Barsh in a tie for 16th at 82.
The final two tickets to the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA
Championship out of the 16-to-18 division went to Luke Ciccarelli of Danville
and Jack Fialko of Berwyn as they made the cut on the number, each signing for
an 83.
Eli Shah of Newtown Square had seven pars on the front nine
on his way to an 81 that gave him the top spot in the 13-to-15 division and led
a group of five of the younger guys who punched their tickets to Springhaven.
Rory Nesbitt of Haverford had four pars on the front nine
and birdied the ninth hole as he carded an 82 to finish a shot behind Shah in
second place in the 13-to-15 division.
Scott Hughes of Ambler, Ryan Garvey of Media and Eric Morgan
of Newtown Square shared third place in the division and made the cut for the
Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship on the number as each posted an 83.
Trey Campbell of Haverford and Kevin Lafond of Blue Bell
shared sixth place, each signing for an 85. Tyler Leyden of Glenside took
eighth place with an 87, Tyler Debusschere of Wallingford was ninth with an 88
and Liam Buckley of Media rounded out the top 10 in the division as he ended up
alone in 10th place with a 90.
Jessica McClellan of Freeland had four pars and a birdie on
the 15th hole and won the girls 16-to-18 division in a scorecard
playoff with Ashley Ea of Perkasie after each posted a 90. McClellan capped her
scholastic career at MMI Prep by finishing 15th in the PIAA Class AA
Championship last fall.
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting kept the momentum of
her round going with a par at the 13th hole on her way to an 81 that
gave her a dominating victory in the 13-to-15 division.
Emma Reilly of Doylestown made five pars on her way to a 95
that gave her runnerup honors in the division. Audrey Reese of Richboro had
three pars in a round of 99 that gave her third place.
Lawson Leeper of York – looks like another Class of 2026 kid
who’s playing pretty good golf in the summer before he starts sixth grade –
bested the field of nine-holers with a 7-over 43 that included three pars and a
birdie at the 13th hole.
Ethan Martin of North Wales birdied the 12thc
hole on his way to a 44 that gave him runnerup honors, a shot behind Leeper.
Davis Conaway of West Chester had pars on the 12th and 14th
