Fedor takes first step to Boys Junior PGA Championship with 70 at Pine Meadows

Shaun Fedor, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a senior at Manheim Township last fall, finished his round in spectacular fashion with an eagle on the 18th hole as he took the first step toward a possible berth in the 44th Boys Junior PGA Championship with a 2-under-par 70 Sunday at Pine Meadows Golf Club in Lebanon in the first of a series of Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour qualifiers.
Fedor headed a group of 19 boys who earned a spot in the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship, which will be held July 1 at The Springhaven Club. The top finishers at Springhaven will earn a trip to one of the top national junior events, the Boys Junior PGA Championship, which tees off July 30 at Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Conn.
It was a regular Junior Tour stop for the girls and the nine-holers at Pine Meadows. It’s not necessary to have qualifiers for the Philadelphia Girls Junior PGA Championship, which will be held June 20 at Bellewood Country Club. The top finishers at Bellewood will tee it up in the 44th Girls Junior PGA Championship, which tees off July 9 at Keney Park.
Fedor had four birdies before his closing eagle in claiming the top spot in the 16-to-18 division in the regular Junior Tour scoring. Most of the 19 qualifiers in the overall 13-to-18 scoring for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship came out of the 16-to-18 division.
Only three boys from the younger 13-to-15 division were able to get under the cut line, which fell at 11-over 83, to advance to Springhaven. The other 16 qualifiers came out of the 16-to-18 division.
Logan Paczewski, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a freshman at Dallas last fall, and John Peters of Carlisle shared second place in the 16-to-18 division as each posted a 2-over 74. Paczewski had five birdies on his card and Peters had six birdies.
Conestoga’s Morgan Lofland, the Central League co-champion as a sophomore last fall, carded a solid 4-over 76 and was alone in fourth place.
Radnor senior Jack Hamilton, a District One Class AAA qualifier last fall, and Haverford School senior Charlie Baker, who helped the Fords capture a second straight Inter-Ac League crown last fall, finished in a tie for fifth place, each posting a 78.
James Ulsh of Carlisle and Colby Hook of Selbyville, Del. shared seventh place, each carding a 79. Jaxon Eck of Harrisburg took ninth with an 80 and John Bradbeer of Bryn Mawr rounded out the top 10 as he finished alone in 10th with an 81.
West Chester Rustin sophomore Ryan D’Ariano, Thomas Butler, who completed a solid scholastic career at Souderton last fall, and Nicholas Schnur of Lafayette Hill finished in a tie for 11th, each posting an 82.
David Fitzgerald Jr., a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior at Harriton last fall, Unionville junior Roy Anderson, and Max Giles of Wayne finished in a tie for 14th, each posting an 83. They were the last three qualifiers for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship out of the 16-to-18 division.
West Chester Rustin sophomore Eric Miller had four birdies, including three on the back nine, and nary a bogey on his scorecard in firing a 1-under 71 that gave him the top spot in the 13-to-15 division. He was also the runnerup to Fedor in the overall 13-to-18 scoring.
Connor Gherghel of Orwigsburg was the runnerup to Miller in the 13-to-15 division with an 80 that included two birdies. Gherghel also punched his ticket to Springhaven with his round.
Harriton sophomore Zachary Sandler finished third with an 83 and got in just on the cut line in the overall 13-to-18 scoring and earned a trip to Springhaven for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship.
Keller Mulhern, who had a solid freshman season at Malvern Prep last fall, finished fourth with an 84, but missed qualifying for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship by a shot.
Bethlehem’s Matthew Vital, the winner of the Boys 12-13 division in the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club in April, Darren Nolan of Glenside and Dylan Kochis of Exton all landed on 86 and finished in a tie for fifth place.
Ryan Horenci of Lansdale took eighth with an 87. Michael Vital of Bethlehem’s Team Vital, and West Chester Rustin sophomore Nicklaus Meisinger rounded out the top 10 as they finished in a tie for ninth, each carding a 91.
Academy of Notre Dame junior Stefanie Bonini claimed her first Junior Tour win of 2019 as she carded a 97 to take top honors in the girls 16-to-18 division. Bonini’s Inter-Ac League rival, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy junior Emma Schotsch, was the runnerup with a 103.
Kayla Maletto of Sinking Spring had the best round posted by a female at Pine Meadows as her 84 gave her the top spot in the 13-to-15 division. Maletto started and finished her round with a birdie.
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting and Emily McAninch of Mechanicsburg shared second place, each posting a 90. Meredith Meyer of Avondale finished fourth with a 152.
Tyler Fortney of Fayetteville had four pars in a 7-over 43 that bested the field of nine-holers. Samuel Feeney of West Chester was a shot behind Fortney in second place with a 44.
The York contingent accounted for the next three spots on the leaderboard as Mason Tucker finished third with a 46 and Reed Krosse and Lawson Leeper shared fourth place, each carding a 50. Jonathan Brubaker of Wayne took sixth place with a 56.
