Devon Prep standout Ryan McCabe of Media jumped out to a big
lead in Thursday’s rainy weather and put together another solid round in
Friday’s gusty winds to capture a victory in a Precision Pro Golf Open event on
the Philadelphia PGA Junior Tour at Hickory Valley Golf Club in New Hanover
Township.
McCabe, who shared second place in the PIAA Class AA
Championship as a sophomore last fall, fired a 2-under-par 69 over Hickory
Valley’s 6,166-yard, par-71 Ambassador Course in Thursday’s opening round and
came with a solid 3-over 74 over the 6,611-yard, par-71 Presidential Course in
the second round in the wind Friday for a 1-over 143 total.
That gave McCabe a seven-shot margin of victory in the
overall 13-to-18 scoring over Matthew Homer of Wilmington, Del., who had a pair
of 75s for an 8-over 150 total. Homer was the winner of the 13-to-15 division.
McCabe dominated the 16-to-18 division, winning by 13 shots
over runnerup Tyler Kipp, a Class AAA East Regional qualifier as a junior at
Muhlenberg last fall.
McCabe got off to a slow start in Thursday’s opening round
before erupting for five birdies in the final 11 holes on his way to his 69. The
longer Presidential Course is usually the tougher of the two Hickory Valley
layouts and Friday’s winds made things even more challenging. But McCabe posted
two more birdies and his 74 was again the best round of the day.
McCabe received a range-finder, courtesy of Precision Pro
Golf, for his victory.
Kipp had opened with a 79 Thursday on the Ambassador Course
and added a 77 on the Presidential Course for a 14-over 156 total that left him
in second place in the 16-to-18 division and third in the overall scoring. Kipp
went even-par on the front nine and had six pars on the incoming nine in
Friday’s second round.
Samuel Barsh of Blue Bell was in second place in the
16-to-18 division after his opening-round 76, but fell back with an 82 Friday
at the Presidential Course to share third place with Christopher Myers of
Yardley at 158, two shots behind Kipp. Myers carded 79s at both courses to get
to 158. Barsh and Myers were tied for sixth in the overall 13-to-18 scoring.
David Fitzgerald Jr., a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior
at Harriton last fall, was a shot behind Barsh and Myers in fifth place at 159
after adding a 78 at the Presidential Course to his opening-round 81 at the
Ambassador Course.
Auggie Reilly of Wayne was in third place in the 16-to-18
division after an opening-round 77 before falling back with an 83 at the
Presidential Course in Friday’s second round to finish alone in fifth place in
the division and ninth in the overall 13-to-18 scoring with a 160 total.
Jun Lee of York finished alone in seventh place at 163 as he
added an 84 at the Presidential Course to his opening-round 79.
Justin Panner of Harleysville and Jack Reid of Medford, N.J.
finished in a tie for eighth place, a shot behind Lee at 164. Panner shaved
eight shots off his opening-round 86 with a 78 at the Presidential Course while
Reid opened with a 79 at the Ambassador Course before adding an 85 in the second
round.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division were
Pennsbury senior Ethan Finkelstein and Joshua Cicco, like Finkelstein a Yardley
resident, as they shared 10th place at 165. Finkelstein added an 81
at the Presidential Course to his opening-round 84 while Cicco opened with an
83 at the Ambassador Course before finishing up with an 82.
Matthew Homer had three straight pars to close out his
opening-round 75 at the Ambassador Course and had a pair of birdies in his
4-over 75 Friday at the Presidential Course in capturing top honors in the
13-to-15 division. His 75 was bettered only by McCabe in Friday’s second round.
Matthew Vital of Bethlehem, still riding the momentum from
his victory in the 12-to-13 division in the Drive, Chip & Putt National Finals
at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday of Masters week, shared second place
with Jack Davis of Newtown Square in the 13-to-15 division at 15-over 157,
seven shots behind Matthew Homer.
Vital had six pars in an 81 in the second round after he had
opened with a solid 5-over 76 at the Ambassador Course. Davis went even-par on
the back nine at the Ambassador Course and led the 13-to-15 division with a
3-over 74. He backed off with an 83 at the Presidential Course. Vital and Davis
were tied for fourth in the overall 13-to-18 scoring.
Connor Gherghel of Orwigsburg took fourth with a 161 total
after adding an 84 at the Presidential Course to his opening-round 77 and
another member of Team Homer of Wilmington, Del., Jeffrey Homer, was a shot
behind Gherghel in fifth place at 162. Jeffrey Homer opened with an 80 at the
Ambassador Course before finishing up with an 82.
Keller Mulhern, coming off a solid freshman season at
Malvern Prep, and Luke Corcoran of Lansdale finished in a tie for sixth place
in the 13-to-15 division at 167. Mulhern opened with a 77 at the Ambassador
Course, but struggled to a 90 in Friday’s difficult conditions. Corcoran
struggled to an 88 at the Ambassador Course, but bounced back with a solid 79
in the second round at the Presidential Course.
Ryan Horenci of Lansdale finished alone in eighth place at
172 after opening with an 82 at the Ambassador Course before struggling to a 90
in Friday’s second round.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division were Eric
Morgan of Newtown Square and Lucas Steinmetz of Gilbertsville, both of whom
shared ninth place as each landed on 174. Morgan struggled to a 90 at the
Presidential Course Friday after opening with an 84 while Steinmetz posted an
87 at each course.
Ava O’Sullivan, who helped Downingtown East earn runnerup
honors in the PIAA Class AAA team competition as a freshman last fall, was
awarded a Precision Pro Golf range-finder as she topped the girls field at
Hickory Valley with a 20-over 162 total.
After opening with an 82 at the Ambassador Course Thursday,
O’Sullivan had two birdies and three pars on the front nine of the Presidential
Course and finished with eight pars overall in a solid round of 80. That gave
O’Sullivan top honors in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall 13-to-18
scoring.
Lauren Jones and Kathleen Mark, sophomores on Episcopal
Academy’s second straight Inter-Ac League championship team this spring,
finished second and third with respective totals of 168 and 169.
Jones, the runnerup in the Inter-Ac League Championship at
French Creek Golf Club last month, opened with an 83 at the Ambassador Course
before adding an 85 in Friday’s second round at the Presidential Course. Mark,
who finished in a tie for fourth in the Inter-Ac Championship at French Creek,

at the Ambassador Course.

division as she added a 92 at the Presidential Course to her opening-round 96

and a 248 total.
Rhianna Gooneratne of Plymouth Meeting edged Megan Adelman
of Bryn Mawr by three shots to capture top honors in the 13-to-15 division.
Gooneratne opened with an 88 at the Ambassador Course before adding an 87 in
the second round at the Presidential Course for a 175 total.

finishing seventh in the Inter-Ac Championship at French Creek, added a 90 at
the Presidential Course to her opening-round 88 for a 178 total.
The Precision Pro Golf events include men’s and women’s
college divisions. Matt Snowden was the lone competitor in the men’s 17-to-24
division and he shaved 10 shots off an opening-round 89 at the Ambassador
Course with a 79 at the Presidential Course for a 168 total. Snowden made six
