Quinten Joiner of Millington, Md. lit up the incoming nine at Garrisons Lake Golf Club in Smyrna, Del. with a 4-under-par 32 on his way to a 2-under 70 as he claimed a victory Sept. 7th in the back end of a weekend in the First State for the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour.
Joiner made a birdie on the fourth hole and then really got going on the back nine with a birdie at 10 and back-to-back birdies at 13 and 14 and again at 16 and 17. He finished with nine pars on his scorecard.
Joiner was coming off a tie for second place in the 13-to-15 division a day earlier in a weather-shortened Philly Junior Tour stop at Odessa National Golf Club.
William Thorkelson of Bryn Mawr was nearly as good as Joiner as he made birdies on the sixth, 10th, 13th, 16th and 18th holes and had nine pars on his card as he matched par with a 72 to earn runnerup honors.
Thorkelson’s birdie burst on the back nine enabled him to tour the incoming nine in even-par 36.
Henry Sokol of Villanova made birdies on the sixth and 12th holes and had 13 pars on his card as he finished in third place with a solid 1-over 73. Like Thorkelson, Henry Sokol toured the incoming nine in even-par 36.
Henry Sokol had shared second place with Joiner in the Philly Junior Tour stop a day earlier at Odessa National.
Gavin Reger of Wayne took fourth place with a 76, Jack Sokol, Henry Sokol’s twin brother, was fifth with a 78, Lucas Solano of Vineland, N.J. was sixth with a 79, Brayden Hughes of Hockessin, Del. was seventh with an 81 and Robert Rittereiser of Wilmington, Del. was eighth with an 85.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division was a trio of players tied for ninth place at 87 that included Ben Meixell of Wilmington, Del., Luke Peyton of Frankford, Del. and Alex Salata of Devon.
Luke LaScala, a junior on the Salesianum golf team, got a share of first place in the 16-to-18 division at Garrisons Lake with Braydon Dolan, a junior on the Springfield golf team, and Gabe Arick, a senior on the St. Mark’s golf team, as each signed for a 4-over 76.
It was a sweep of the two weekend Philly Junior Tour stops in Delaware for LaScala as he finished alone atop the leaderboard a day earlier at Odessa National.
At Garrisons Lake, LaScala went back-to-back with birdies at the sixth and seventh holes and had 10 pars on his scorecard. He toured the outgoing nine in even-par 36.
Dolan made birdies at the sixth, 13th, 15th and 17th holes and had nine pars on his card. Arick made birdies at the 15th and 17th holes and 12 pars on his card, rattling off nine straight pars from six through 14.
Jack Yantosh, a junior on the Garnet Valley golf team, took fourth place with a 79, Caiden Jordan of Rising Sun, Md. was fifth with an 80, Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. was sixth with an 81, James Henry of Wilmington, Del. was seventh with an 83 and Bradford Bergstrom of Moorestown, N.J. was eighth with an 84.
Jack Kessler of Mickleton, N.J. took ninth place with an 85 and Nathaniel Clark of Dover, Del. rounded out the field in the 16-to-18 division as he finished 10th with an 87.
Isha Garg of Berlin, Md. made a birdie on the first hole and went back-to-back with birdies at 12 and 13 as she completed a sweep of the weekend in Delaware for the Philly Junior Tour with a sparkling 3-over 75 that gave her a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division. Garg had nine pars on her scorecard.
Garg was coming off a victory a day earlier at Odessa National. Afternoon thunderstorms halted the round after seven holes, but Garg was 3-over at Odessa National. The following day at Garrisons Lake, she proved she can go the distance.
Nicole Tarqunio of Bridgeton, N.J. made a birdie at the 13th hole and eight pars on her card as she earned runnerup honors with a solid 81.
Brooke Burge of Middletown, Del. made a birdie on the 11th hole and had three pars on her card, all of them on Garrisons Lake’s incoming nine, as she rounded out a short field in the 16-to-18 division by finishing in third place with a 97.
Michael Perry of Wilmington, Del. bested the field of boys 12-and-under nine-holers as he made birdies on the first and sixth holes and had five pars on his scorecard on his way to an even-par 36.
Damien Dollard of Cinnaminson, N.J. and Samuel Karas of Blue Bell shared second place as each ended up four shots behind Perry at 4-over 40.
Dollard made a birdie on the third hole and had three pars on his card. Dollard was coming off a tie for third place a day earlier at Odessa National, although play was halted after just five holes for the nine-holers.
Karas had six pars on his card.
Niko Muego of Bryn Mawr took fourth place with a 41, Charlie Sears of Wilmington, Del. and Victor Wang of Hockessin, Del. shared fifth place, each tallying a 42, and Dean Matta of West Grove and Luke George of Mullica Hill, N.J. finished in a tie for seventh, each registering a 43.
Thayer Boyd of Kennett Square took ninth place with a 45, Jackson Ehrlich of Berwyn was 10th with a 46 and Kelly Salvesen of Cape May Court House, N.J. rounded out the field in the boys 12-and-under division as he finished 11th with a 51.
