Savannah Laverty, a junior at Moorestown High in South Jersey, continued her strong play this summer with a two-shot victory in the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour’s Girls Summer Championship, a two-day event July 28th and 29th at Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club, the challenging William Flynn design in Fort Washington.
Mother Nature turned up the heat for the event, but Laverty never wilted, opening with a 4-under-par 70 to take a two-shot lead and then coming back with a 1-under 73 to finish two shots clear of Myra Tomer, a precocious 13-year-old from Newtown, in the overall scoring with a 5-under 143 total.
The Girls Summer Championship was a Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) event, awarding points that can earn players some status on some of the higher-profile junior circuits, most notably the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).
The JGS scoring was for players ages 13 to 18. The Philly Junior Tour broke out its usual 16-to-18 and 13-to-15 age groups, so I’ll wrap them up while referring to the overall standings.
Nobody was better than Laverty.
She capped her opening-round 70 with an eagle at the par-5 16th hole. She made birdies at the third, fifth, 10th and 15th holes and had 11 pars on her scorecard.
Playing with the lead in the second round, Laverty remained aggressive, making birdies at the third, 10th, 12th, 15th and 16th holes and recording 10 pars, eight of them during a 1-under 35 tour of the outgoing nine at Manny’s, as she closed with a 73 to finish at the top of the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall strandings.
