Gebhardt soars to top of the leaderboard in a Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship qualifier at Elmhurst

Eddie Gebhardt, a junior on the Strath Haven golf team, made an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole on his way to an even-par 72 at Elmhurst Country Club in Moscow, outside of Scranton, Wednesday as he led a group of 17 players who qualified for next month’s Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship.

The Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship will be held July 1 at the RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve. The top finishers at RiverCrest will earn a trip to the Boys Junior PGA Championship, one of the major national events for junior golfers which tees off July 29 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour broke out is usual 16-to-18 and 13-to-15 age groups, so I’ll round them up while referring to the overall 13-to-18 scoring. The Boys Junior PGA Championship is open to players ages 13 to 18.

Gebhardt, a District One Class AAA qualifier for the Panthers last fall, also made a birdie on the second hole and had 13 pars on his scorecard, including a string of six straight pars to finish up his round.

Gebhardt’s 72 gave him the top spot in the 16-to-18 division and enabled him to finish first in the overall 13-to-18 scoring.

Keegan Redmond, a junior on the Hershey golf team, got it going on the incoming nine at Elmhurst, making birdies at the 11th, 15th, 17th and 18th holes as he toured the back in 4-under 32 on his way to a 1-over 73 that left him a shot behind Gebhardt in second place among the older guys and in the overall scoring.

Redmond, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a sophomore in 2023, had nine pars on his card.

Luke Fallon, a junior on the Wilson golf team, made birdies on the sixth, 10th and 14th holes and had nine pars on his card as he finished two shots behind Redmond in third place in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall standings with a 3-over 75.

Chase Andrews, a sophomore on the Souderton golf team, and David Burmeister, who wrapped up his scholastic career at Southern Lehigh last fall, both landed a shot behind Fallon in a tie for fourth place among the older guys and tied for fourth in the overall scoring as each posted a 4-over 76.

Chase Yenser, who finished in a tie for second place in the PIAA Class AAA Championship as a junior on the Daniel Boone golf team last fall, signed for a 5-over 77 as he shared sixth in the 16-to-18 division with Quin Zuegner, a sophomore on The Hill School golf team and a New Hope resident, and Brendan Bell, a freshman on Scranton Prep’s PIAA Class AA championship team last fall.

Yenser, Zuegner and Bell were part of a five-way logjam tied for sixth place in the overall scoring with a couple of talented freshmen, Cole Powell, a teammate of Bell’s on Scranton Prep’s Class AA state championship team, and Holden Sparks of Nazareth as Powell and Sparks were co-medalists in the 13-to-15 division with their 5-over 77s.

Keller Tannehill of Margate, N.J. finished alone in ninth place in the 16-to-18 division and 11th in the overall scoring with a 78.

Harrison Brown, a senior on The Haverford School’s Inter-Ac League championship team last fall, and Phillip Matthews, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior on the Abington Heights golf team last fall, rounded out the top 10 among the older guys as they finished in a tie for 10th place, each recording a 79.

Brown and Matthews shared 12th place in the overall standings with Sebastian Park of Lansdale, who matched their 7-over 79s while finishing in third place in the 13-to-15 division, two shots behind Powell and Sparks.

Jake Hollerback, coming off a victory in last month’s rain-shortened Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association Championship at the St. Anne’s Golf Links in Middletown, Del., headed a trio of players who finished in a tie for 12th place in the 16-to-18 division, each registering an 80.

Sam Shaner, who wrapped his scholastic career with the State College golf team last fall, and Gavin Pychinka, who wrapped up his scholastic career at Northampton by qualifying for the PIAA Class AAA Championship last fall, matched Hollerback’s 80.

Hollerback, Shaner and Pychinka finished in a tie for 15th place in the overall standings, grabbing the final three spots available at Elmhurst to the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship.

Scranton Prep’s Powell made birdies on the fourth, 10th and 13th holes and had eight pars on his scorecard to get his share of the top spot in the 13-to-15 division and finish in a tie for sixth place in the overall standings with a 5-over 77.

Nazareth’s Sparks made a birdie on the seventh hole and had 11 pars on his card, seven of them on Elmhurst’s incoming nine, as he matched Powell’s 5-over 77 to earn his piece of first place among the younger guys and join the group tied for sixth in the overall standings.

Lansdale’s Park made a birdie on the 14th hole and had 10 pars on his card as he took third place in the 13-to-15 division with a 79.

Park was the last player in the 13-to-15 division to punch his ticket to the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship as he finished among the trio tied for 12th place along with Haverford School’s Brown and Abington Heights’ Matthews from the 16-to-18 division in the overall scoring.

Liam Gill took fourth place in the 13-to-15 division with an 81 and the quartet of Mason Kim of Blue Bell, William Thorkelson of Bryn Mawr, Jack Sokol of Villanova and Jack Gioffre finished in a tie for fifth place, each tallying an 85.

Owen Ciesielka of West Chester finished in ninth place among the younger guys with an 86 and Luke Cheuvront of Rising Sun, Md. rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division as he finished 10th with a 94.

Andrew DElia of Clarks Summit made a birdie on the fifth hole and had three pars on his scorecard as he bested the field of boys 12-and-under nine-holers with a 5-over 41.

Charlie Sears of Wilmington, Del. made a birdie on the third hole and had four pars on his card as he finished a shot behind DElia in second place with a 6-over 42.

Sadashiv Joshi had three pars on his card as he took third place with a 45.

Jace Collins of Spring Brook Township rounded out the field in the boys 12-and-under division as he finished in fourth place with a 51.
