David Burmeister, who wrapped his scholastic career at Southern Lehigh last fall, carded a sparkling 3-under-par 69 at Valleybrook Country Club in Blackwood, N.J. Wednesday to head a group of 22 qualifiers for the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship.
Burmeister got hot early in his round as he made a birdie on the second hole, rattled off three straight birdies at four, five and six and another at nine in a 3-under 33 tour of the outgoing nine at Valleybrook.
Burmeister added birdies on the 10th and 17th holes and had eight pars on his scorecard.
The Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship will tee off July 1 at the RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve. The top finishers at RiverCrest earn a trip to the Boys Junior PGA Championship, one of the premier national events for junior golfers.
The Boys Junior PGA Championship will tee off July 29 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour broke out its usual 16-to-18 and 13-to-15 divisions, so I’ll wrap them up while referring to the overall 13-to-18 scoring. The Boys Junior PGA Championship is open to players ages 13 to 18.
Burmeister’s 69 gave him the top spot in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall standings. Of the 22 players that advanced out of the qualifier at Valleybrook, 19 came out of the 16-to-18 division.
Chris Sung, a senior on the Conestoga golf team, and Anestis Kalderemtzis, a senior on the golf team for reigning District One Class AAA champion West Chester Rustin, finished in a tie for second among the older guys and in the overall scoring as each posted a solid 1-under 71.
Sung had a pair of eagles on his card, one at the par-5 10th hole and another at the par-5 17th. He added birdies at the second, third and sixth holes and had seven pars on his card.
Kalderemtzis made birdies on the second, fourth, ninth and 17th holes and had 11 pars on his card.
The trio of Tyler Whitney of Cherry Hill, N.J., Cole Berry, Kalderemtzis’ teammate on the district champion Rustin team and also a senior, and Michael Gravinese, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a sophomore on the Spring-Ford golf team last fall, finished in a tie for fourth place in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall standings, each matching par with a 72.
Cade Kelleher, who wrapped up his scholastic career at Abington Heights last fall with a trip to the PIAA Class AAA Championship, Moravian Academy senior Collin Schreiber, a PIAA Class AA qualifier last fall, and Isaac Birdsong of King of Prussia finished in a tie for seventh place in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall scoring as each signed for a 1-over 73.
A couple of Catholic League rivals, Patrick Rode, a junior on the St. Joseph’s Prep golf team, and John Gavaghan, a senior on the La Salle golf team, each registered a 2-over 74 to finish in a tie for 10th place among the older guys and in the overall standings.
Connor Smolenski of West Chester and Justin Marcus, a senior on the Downingtown West golf team, shared 12th place in the 16-to-18 division and in the overall scoring as each recorded a 3-over 75.
Tre Lesperance, who wrapped up his scholastic career at Unionville last fall, finished alone in 14th place among the older guys and shared 14th place in the overall standings with Holden Sparks, a sophomore on the Nazareth golf team who finished at the top of the 13-to-15 leaderboard as each carded a 4-over 76.
Logan Cassidy, a junior on the Holy Ghost Prep golf team, and Lannon Boyd, a senior on the Radnor golf team, finished in a tie for 15th place in the 16-to-18 division and shared 16th place in the overall scoring with Trebor Melendez, the phenom from Vineland, N.J. who was the runnerup in the 13-to-15 division, as each signed for a 5-over 77.
The final three tickets to RiverCrest and the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship out of the 16-to-18 division were earned by the trio of Luke Canino of Sewell, N.J., Kyan DeLong, a senior on the Emmaus golf team, and Will Krietsch, a senior on the Episcopal Academy golf team, as each landed on 6-over 78 and finished in a tie for 19th in the overall scoring.
They were joined at 6-over by Lucas Solano, like Melendez a Vineland, N.J. guy, as he grabbed the final ticket to RiverCrest out of the 13-to-15 division, his 78 leaving him in third place among the younger guys.
Nazareth’s Sparks made a birdie on the 11th hole and had 12 pars on his scorecard, including six straight pars to close out his round, as his 4-over 76 left him atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division and in a tie for 14th place in the overall standings with Unionville’s Lesperance.
Melendez also had a steady round as he had 14 pars on his card, including seven straight pars to open his round, to earn runnerup honors in the 13-to-15 division and tied for 16th place in the overall standings with Holy Ghost Prep’s Cassidy and Radnor’s Boyd with a 5-over 77.
Solano, Melendez’s fellow Vinelander, made birdies on the second, fourth and ninth holes and had eight pars on his card, including four straight to close out his round, as he finished a shot behind Melendez among the younger guys in third place with a 6-over 78.
More importantly, Solano joined the trio of Canino, DeLong and Krietsch from the 16-to-18 division in the tie for 19th place in the overall standings to qualify for a spot in the field in the Philadelphia Boys Junior PGA Championship on the number.
Anderson Narzisi, a sophomore on the Souderton golf team, and William Quartermain of Bryn Mawr finished in a tie for fourth place in the 13-to-15 division, each recording a 7-over 79.
Alex DiGiacinto, Sparks’ teammate on the Nazareth golf team and, like Sparks, a sophomore, finished alone in sixth place among the younger guys with an 80.
The trio of Torrin Denton of Mullica Hill, N.J., Jack Gioffre of Newtown Square and Anthony Albano shared seventh place in the 13-to-15 division, each registering an 84.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division was Ethan Clouser of Newtown as he finished alone in 10th place with an 86.
Trisha Lobo, the talented 10-year-old from Collegeville, bested the field of girls 12-and-under nine-holers as she had four pars on her scorecard on her way to a 7-over 43.
A couple of members of Elkins Park’s Team Brillman, Evelyn Brillman and Eleanor Brillman, rounded out a short field in the girls 12-and-under division as they finished in second and third place, respectively.
Evelyn Brillman made back-to-back pars on the fourth and fifth holes as she finished two shots behind Lobo in second place with a 45. Eleanor Brillman made pars on the fifth and seventh holes as she was another two shots behind Evelyn Brillman in third place with a 49.
Sadashiv Joshi was the lone entry in the boys 12-and-under division and he made a birdie on the sixth hole and a par at four on his way to a 48.
