Looks like Malvern Prep golf coach Gary Duda might have a couple of solid freshman prospects competing for a roster spot for the Friars when the school year starts.
Owen Ciesielka and Tucker Detwiler, a couple of West Chester guys, had the best scores of the day as each carded a solid 6-over-par 76 in sweltering weather June 23rd at Chapel Hill Golf Course outside of Reading that enabled them to share first place in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour event.
Ciesielka got it going in the middle of his round with birdies at the seventh, ninth and 11th holes and had seven pars on his scorecard. Detwiler was steady with 12 pars on his card, including a string of nine straight pars from the third through the 11th holes.
Jake Julian, a Malvern resident who, it looks like, might be an Inter-Ac League rival of Ciesielka and Detwiler at Episcopal Academy, finished a shot behind the pair of Friars in third place with a 7-over 77.
Julian made birdies on the 12th and 14th holes and had 11 pars on his card.
Ethan Clouser of Newtown took fourth place with a 78, Mason Kim of Blue Bell was fifth with a 79, Carter Johnson of Berwyn was sixth with an 80 and Jesse Shurmann of Villanova was seventh with an 84.
Chase Robbins took eighth place with an 89, Chase Yakaitis was ninth with a 90 and Jesse Kanefsky rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division as he finished in 10th place with a 92.
Chris Cipollone of Havertown made birdies at the first, eighth and 16th holes and had six pars on his scorecard as he finished at the top of the scoreboard in the 16-to-18 division with a 10-over 80.
Will Swartley, a senior on the Boyertown golf team, had nine pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors among the older guys with an 82 that left him two shots behind Cipollone.
Pierce Drake, a junior on the Bishop Shanahan golf team, and Colin Daugherty finished in a tie for third place as each signed for an 85. Drake had four pars on his card while Daugherty had five pars on his card.
Luke Farnese, a senior on the Plymouth-Whitemarsh golf team, and Vyom Shukla of Berwyn shared fifth place, each tallying an 86, Gavin Kinsey, Swartley’s Boyertown teammate and also a senior with the Bears, was seventh with an 89, Kevin Cavalluzzo of Doylestown was eighth with a 90 and Owen Rakow, a senior at La Salle and a Lansdale resident, finished ninth with a 92.
Aiden French, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier as a junior at Red Land last fall, and Chase McAteer, a senior on the Owen J. Roberts golf team, shared 10th place, each recording a 94, and Justin Gatti rounded out the field in the 16-to-18 division as he finished 12th with a 96.
On the girls side, the low score of the day also emerged from the 13-to-15 division as Olivia Kirmayer of Downingtown made a birdie on the 17th hole and had four pars on her scorecard on her way to a 102 that gave her a Philly Junior Tour victory.
Abigail Olex, a Media resident and a member of the Sacred Heart Academy golf team, rounded out a short field in the 13-to-15 division as she finished up her round with a par on the 18th hole for a 105 that left her three shots behind Kirmayer in second place.
Madeline Van Vooren of Phoenixville was the lone entry in the 16-to-18 division and she made a par on the 14th hole on her way to a 108.
It was very competitive among the boys 12-and-under nine-holers as Samuel Karas of Blue Bell, Jack Kelmer of Wayne and Niko Muego of Bryn Mawr finished in a three-way tie for first place, each landing on 3-over 39.
Karas had six pars on his scorecard, including four straight pars to close out his round, Kelmer made a birdie on the second hole and had four pars on his card, and Muego made a birdie on the fourth hole and had five pars on his card, including a run of four straight pars from the fifth through the eighth holes.
Damien Dollard of Cinnaminson, N.J. and Helmut Dang of Newtown Square shared fourth place as each signed for a 41, Joe Bowers of Lewisburg was sixth with a 42, Preston Minio of Lansdale was seventh a 43 and Andrew DElia of Clarks Summit was eighth with a 44.
That’s eight players separated by five shots, a typically contentious battle among the boys nine-holers.
Jaxson Freeborn of Reading took ninth place with a 52 and Tyler Smith of Blue Bell rounded out the field in the boys 12-and-under division as he finished 10th with a 56.
