A very good 2024 for Rolling Green Golf Club assistant pro Anthony Sebastianelli got even better Monday when he captured the lucrative top prize of $15,000 with a two-shot victory in the Silvercrest Cup at the Union League’s Liberty Hill Course.
Sebastianelli finished with a flourish with birdies at the 14th, 16th and 17th holes on his way to a sizzling 6-under-par 66 over the Liberty Hill layout.
The Silvercrest Cup is the brainchild of the Silvercrest Asset Management Group, an investment adviser providing asset management and family office services to high net-worth individuals and select institutional investors.
In addition to the total purse of $30,000 that was up for grabs at Union League Liberty Hill, there were four Silvercrest Cup qualifiers with a bonus pool of $4,000 distributed to the top two finishers in each qualifier. In addition to the $15,000 top prize for his Silvercrest Cup victory at Union League Liberty Hill, Sebastianelli also earned $2,500 out of the bonus pool when he won the Doylestown Open, the last of the four Silvercrest Cup qualifiers.
The top eight players on the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s William Hyndman III Player of the Year standings are also invited to tee it up in the Silvercrest Cup.
Sebastianelli, who starred scholastically at Abington Heights and collegiately at Central Connecticut State, got off to a fast start at Union Hill Liberty Hill as he made birdies at the first, second, fourth and ninth holes.
Sebastianelli made bogeys at the 10th and 13th holes around a birdie at 11, setting the stage for his closing burst that gave him a two-shot victory over Cedarbrook Country Club assistant pro Andrew Cornish, who posted a solid 4-under 68.
“I hit it pretty well and putted well today,” Sebastianelli told the Philadelphia Section website. “There were times in the round when it could have gotten away from me, but my caddy kept me relaxed. It was different with the wind and the greens were very quick. (Union League Liberty Hill) was a great test of golf today.”
Four players finished two shots behind Cornish in a tie for fourth place at 2-under 70, including Michael Little of Clubhouse 54, Trevor Bensel of Sandy Run Country Club, Joe Kogelman of GOLFTEC Moorestown and Zac Oakley, an instructor at Bidermann Golf Club.
Andrew Turner of Whitford Country Club finished alone in seventh place with a 1-under 71 and Sebastianelli’s Rolling Green colleague, Braden Shattuck, the two-time reigning Rolex/Haverford Trust Company Player of the Year in the Philadelphia Section, and Mark Sheftic, the head of instruction at Sunnybrook Golf Club, shared eighth place, each matching par with a 72.
Looks like Sheftic has joined the senior ranks, a strong addition to an already talent-laden senior contingent in the Philadelphia Section, and his 72 left him atop the leaderboard in the Senior division.
Brian Kelly of Titleist Fitwear and the former longtime head pro at Bucknell Golf Club, George Forster, the former longtime head pro at Radnor Valley Country Club, Dave Quinn of Laurel Creek Country Club and Terry Hertzog of Bent Creek Country Club finished a shot behind Sheftic in a tie for second place among the seniors, each posting a 1-over 73.
Buddy Hansen of Blue Bell Country Club was the low amateur as he carded a solid 1-under 71. Hansen was a scholastic standout at Catholic League power La Salle and played college golf at Temple.
Patrick Knott of Merion Golf Club and Jake Haberstumpf of LedgeRock Golf Club shared runnerup honors as each recorded a 1-over 73. Haberstumpf reached the semifinals of the BMW Philadelphia Amateur in June before falling to eventual winner Austin Barbin at Whitemarsh Valley Country Club.
Kennett Square Golf & Country Club’s Andrew Keeling, winner of the inaugural Silvercrest Cup in 2022 and a co-champion a year ago, finished in fourth place among the amateurs with a 5-over 77.
Joanna Coe, the head of instruction at Merion, was the lone woman in the field and registered a solid 3-over 75. Coe was coming off a victory in the Women’s Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship Sept. 11th at the Union League’s Torresdale Course.
Rolling Green colleagues Shattuck and Sebastianelli went 1-2, respectively, in the Jack Jolly & Son Championship Sept. 9th at Moselem Springs Golf Club in Fleetwood, Berks County.
Shattuck made the Jack Jolly his third Philadelphia Section victory of the year with a sizzling 6-under 64 that gave him a two-shot margin over Sebastianelli, who posted a 4-under 66.
Shattuck, the low club pro in the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky. in May, was 7-under through 12 holes at Moselem Springs. He made birdies at the first, second and sixth holes, had an eagle at the par-5 seventh and birdies at 10 and 12.
A bogey at the 14th hole slowed Shattuck’s roll a little, but he bounced with a birdie at 15, the sixth birdie on his scorecard, before falling back to 6-under with a bogey at 17.
Whitford’s Turner was a shot behind Sebastianelli in third place with a 3-under 67 and Little of Clubhouse 54 and Peter Clarke of Manufacturers’ Golf & Country Club finished in a tie for fourth, each signing for a 2-under 68.
Bent Creek’s Hertzog, finished at the top of the leaderboard in the Senior division as he matched par with a 70. Bill Sautter, working out of the pro shop at Philadelphia Cricket Club, also matched par with a 70 to capture top honors in the Super Senior division.
There was a concurrent Central Counties Chapter event at the Jack Jolly and Parks Price of Hanover Country Club defeated Hertzog and Jeff Fick of host Moselem Springs in a playoff for the victory after all three matched par with a 70.
In the concurrent Philadelphia Assistants’ Organization (PAO) event, Sebastianelli’s 4-under 66 gave him the victory by two shots over Whitford’s Turner.
Merion’s Coe tuned up for her victory two days later in the Women’s Philadelphia PGA Professional Championship at Union League Torresdale by winning the Women’s division in the Jack Jolly with a 2-over 72.
Green Valley Country Club’s Brittany Weddell finished two shots behind Coe in second place with a 4-over 74.
In addition to title sponsor Jack Jolly & Son, Inc., the Jack Jolly was supported by Jani-King, KM Golf Sales, Ohana Farm LLC and the PGA Tour.
