Junior Sean Curran earned co-medalist honors with a sparkling 2-under-par 33 to lead The Haverford School to a sweep of the Penn Charter Invitational on a sun-splashed Tuesday at The 1912 Club.
The defending Inter-Ac League champion Fords finished with a 180 team total that left them two shots clear of Episcopal Academy and tied at the top of the standings with the Churchmen after two of six invitationals that comprise the regular season.
Episcopal Academy had swept its five Inter-Ac rivals in The Haverford School Invitational last week at Gulph Mills Golf Club.
Haverford School’s 5-0 day at The 1912 Club gave the Fords a 9-1 record through two invitationals. Arch-rival Episcopal Academy went 4-1 with its runnerup finish and is also 9-1.
Curran was on leaderboards in junior tournaments all summer, losing in a playoff in the Christman Cup, one of the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s major championships for junior players, at Huntingdon Valley Country Club.
Backing up Curran for the Fords was junior Liam McFadden, who matched par with a clutch 35.
Haverford School’s veteran seniors rounded out the scoring as Gregor Weissenberger, winner of the Bert Linton Invitational for the Inter-Ac’s individual title last fall at Aronimink Golf Club, and Harrison Brown each posted a 2-over 37 and J.P. Hoban added a solid 38.
Brown had a pretty nice summer himself as he captured the title in the Jock MacKenzie Memorial, another of GAP’s junior majors, at Sandy Run Country Club and won Philadelphia Country Club’s junior boys club championship.
Episcopal Academy was led by sophomore Freddy Hartmann, who matched Curran’s 2-under 33 to get a share of medalist honors in the individual chase.
Hartmann’s on a bit of a heater as he turned in several strong performances in August on the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour and was the medalist in leading EA to a sweep of The Haverford School Invitational at Gulph Mills last week.
Liam Crowley, another sophomore on a young EA roster, was just a shot behind the top two with a 1-under 34 at The 1912 Club.
Parker Smith, another junior for the Churchmen, and freshman Max Leung backed up the top two as each signed for a 3-over 38. I’m going to go ahead and guess that Max Leung is the younger brother of Clarrisa Leung, an Episcopal Academy senior who captured the individual title in the Inter-Ac League Championship for the girls in the spring at French Creek Golf Club.
Episcopal Academy had its pick for its final counter as both junior co-captain Will Krietsch and eighth--grader George Hempel registered a 39.
Malvern Prep, behind a 1-under 34 from junior Davis Conaway, finished seven shots behind Episcopal Academy in third place at The 1912 Club with a 189.
It was the second straight third-place finish for the Friars and left them in third place in the Inter-Ac standings with a 6-4 record.
Conaway is one of the top players in the Inter-Ac as he won the title in the Bert Linton Invitational as a freshman at Llanerch Country Club in the fall of 2022 and finished in a tie for third place in defense of his Bert Linton crown a year ago at Aronimink.
Thomas Ploszay, another junior, backed up Conaway with a 2-over 37 for Malvern Prep. Brody Bell and Mac Traynor, the Friars’ senior co-captains, each recorded a 4-over 39.
Sophomore Michael DeDomenico had the final counter for Malvern Prep with a 40.
Host Penn Charter finished three shots behind Malvern Prep in fourth place with a 192 total. The Quakers are in fourth place in the Inter-Ac standings with a 4-6 mark.
Germantown Academy finished in fifth place with a 198 total at The 1912 Club and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy was sixth with a 209 total.
The Patriots are in fifth place in the team standings with a 2-8 mark and Springside Chestnut Hill remained winless through two invitationals with an 0-10 record.
