Malvern Prep was hanging in there as Germantown Academy swept the first two Inter-Ac League invitationals of the season, the opener hosted by the Patriots at Bluestone Country Club and the stop at Gulph Mills Golf Club hosted by The Haverford School.
With a sweep of its own in the invitational hosted by Penn Charter Tuesday at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, Malvern Prep moved within striking distance of Germantown Academy, which continued its strong play by finishing four shots behind the Friars in second place.
Getting a pair of 2-over-par 37s from senior leader Keller Mulhern and precocious eighth-grader Davis Conaway, Malvern Prep recorded a solid team score of 191 to make it a 5-0 day. Conaway captured the Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Junior-Junior Championship in the summer at the Moorestown Field Club.
Senior Jack Davis backed up the top two as he carded a solid 3-over 38 and freshman Michael Henry had the fourth counter for the Friars with a 4-over 39. Take your pick as to which player you want to give credit to for the final Malvern Prep counter as junior Dylan O’Connor and sophomore Marshall Kain each signed for a 5-over 40.
At the halfway point of the six Inter-Ac invitationals, Mulhern holds the lead in the individual standings with 257 points.
Germantown Academy was led by junior Charley Ota and senior Jack Luviano, both of whom carded a 3-over 38, as the Patriots posted a solid 195 team total. Ota is Mulhern’s closest pursuer in the individual points standings as he is just two points behind with 255 points.
Germantown Academy remains atop the league standings through three invitationals with a 14-1 mark. The Patriots have not won an Inter-Ac title since the current format was adopted a decade ago when the league moved golf from the spring to the fall.
With its sweep Tuesday at Huntingdon Valley, Malvern Prep moved into the runnerup spot with a 12-3 mark.
Perennial Inter-Ac powers Haverford School and Episcopal Academy went 3-4, respectively, the Fords taking third place with a 198 total, three shots behind Germantown Academy, and the Churchmen finishing in fourth place, just a shot behind Haverford School with a 199 total.
The individual co-medalists at Huntingdon Valley were Episcopal sophomore Hunter Stetson and Haverford School’s Trey Campbell as each posted a 1-over 36.
Episcopal remained in third place in the Inter-Ac standings with a 9-6 mark. Haverford School, winner of the last three Inter-Ac titles in 2017, ’18 and ’19, was in fourth place with a 7-8 mark.
Host Penn Charter finished in fifth place at Huntingdon Valley with a 214 total. Springside Chestnut Hill Academy finished in sixth place with a 232 total. The Quakers were in fifth place in the standings through three invitationals with a 3-12 mark while Springside Chestnut Hill Academy remained winless with an 0-15 mark.
Malvern Prep tuned up for Tuesday’s round at Huntingdon Valley with a 196-219 nonleague victory Monday over The Hill School at the Friars’ home course, Applebrook Golf Club, the Gil Hanse original in East Goshen Township. Mulhern led the way for the Friars as he opened his round with an eagle at the par-5 first hole and added birdies at the third and eighth holes, posting a scintillating 4-under 32 on Applebrook’s outgoing nine.
