Germantown Academy remained in control of the Inter-Ac League’s golf race as, for the third time this season, the Patriots swept their foes with a solid 194 team total in Tuesday’s invitational hosted by Malvern Prep at a windy Whitford Country Club.
One thing all of those invitational sweeps have in common is that GA sophomore Ajeet Bagga was the individual medalist in each of them. Ajeet Bagga’s 34 at Whitford was the day’s best score and led the way for the Patriots.
Ajeet Bagga’s older sister Serena Bagga, a junior, added a 38. Senior Luke Marvin, winner of the Bert Linton Memorial Inter-Ac individual championship as a sophomore in 2019, and Jack Luviano each checked in with a 40. The Patriots could take their pick for a fifth score as Seth Roth, another senior, and sophomore Will Irons both posted a 42.
Rounding out the Germantown Academy lineup was senior Alex Creighton, who registered a 47.
Malvern Prep remained GA’s closest pursuer as the host Friars, behind a pair of 40s carded by senior Keller Mulhern and freshman Michael Henry, posted a 203 that left them nine shots behind the Patriots in second place.
GA’s third sweep in four invitationals left it with a 19-1 mark. Malvern Prep, which handed GA its only loss when the Friars swept the invitational hosted by Penn Charter at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, is in second place with a 16-4 mark. Episcopal Academy, which has been shorthanded in its last two invitational appearances, finished third at Whitford with a 210 total.
The Churchmen are third in the standings with a 12-8 mark. Perennial Inter-Ac power Haverford School is in fourth place with a 9-11 record, Penn Charter is in fifth place with a 4-16 mark and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy is in sixth place at 0-20.
Mulhern maintained a narrow lead over Ajeet Bagga in what has become a two-horse race in the battle for the best regular-season individual player in the league. Mulhern has 337 points through four invitationals while Ajeet Bagga has piled up 328 points.
Backing up Mulhern and Henry for Malvern Prep were three players who landed on 41, including senior Jack Davis, junior Dylan O’Connor and eighth-grade standout Davis Conaway.
Episcopal was led by sophomore Jack Yearley, whose 35 was the second-best score of the day. Sophomore Jack Logan and Dan Kane each added a 42, senior co-captain Glenallen Thomas carded a 43 and sophomore Jack Crowley rounded out the scoring for the Churchmen with a 48.
Episcopal Academy will play host for the fifth invitational Thursday at Merion Golf Club’s West Course. The final invitational will be hosted by Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Monday at The 1912 Club.
