Radnor senior Shaun Mazzalupi closed out the 2023 Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour season on a winning note on a chilly Sunday with a 6-over-par 76 that left him at the top of the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division at Bella Vista Golf Course in Gilbertsville.
Only the older guys were able to complete 18 holes on a day when frost undoubtedly forced the start of play to be delayed. I was looping maybe 20 miles away at Stonewall and it was still pretty cold when we teed off around 10 a.m.
Mazzalupi completed a standout scholastic career at Radnor last month when he earned a third straight trip to the PIAA Class AAA Championship at Penn State. Sunday at Bella Vista, he made a birdie at the 11th hole and had 10 pars on his scorecard, including five straight pars from the sixth to the 10th holes.
It was Mazzalupi’s fourth win of the season on the Philly Junior Tour. Mazzalupi finished in a tie for second place in a much warmer Philly Junor Tour stop a day earlier at The Shore Club.
Boyertown junior Chase Dillman, playing close to his Gilbertsville home, finished two shots behind Mazzalupi in second place with an 8-over 78 as he made a birdie at the 16th hole and had eight pars on his card.
Brayden Tritsch of Medford, N.J. made birdies on the second, seventh and 14th holes and had six pars on his card as finished in third place with a 79.
Quakertown senior Brady Gallagher and Connor Breen, another Medford, N.J. guy, shared fourth place, each posting an 80. Gallagher was coming off a Philly Junior Tour victory a day earlier at The Shore Club.
Shane Callahan of Schwenksville took sixth place with a 97 and Ryan Marsh of Coatesville rounded out the field in the 16-to-18 division as he finished seventh with a 121.
Archmere Academy sophomore Michael Liu, a Garnet Valley resident, capped a solid fall campaign on the Philly Junior Tour with a win in the 13-to-15 division as he carded a 5-over 40 on the outgoing nine at Bella Vista.
Liu made birdies on the first and sixth holes and a par at five to claim his sixth Philly Junior Tour win of the season. Liu was coming off a tie for fifth place in the Philly Junior Tour stop at The Shore Club.
Joseph Gangemi Jr. of Downingtown had five pars on his scorecard as he finished a shot behind Liu in second place with a 6-over 41.
Sebastian Park of Lansdale, Zach Raihall of West Chester and Jackson Murland of Villanova finished in a tie for third place, each landing a shot behind Gangemi with a 42.
Park made a birdie at the third hole and had two pars on his card, Raihall had four pars on his card and Murland had five pars on his card.
Yaejoon Wee of Chesterbrook and Ty Sheftic of Blue Bell shared sixth place, each recording a 43, Joshua Kriegel of Lawrenceville, N.J. was eighth with a 45 and Alex Poeth of Royersford was ninth with a 49.
Vyom Shukla of Berwyn rounded out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division as he finished in 10th place with a 50.
Mirai Kambaysha of Malvern was the only player to tee it up in the girls 16-to-18 division and she capped a solid fall on the Philly Junior Tour with a 7-over 42 over the front nine at Bella Vista. Kambayashi made back-to-back pars at the fifth and sixth holes to highlight her round.
Emma Gangemi, another member of Downingtown’s Team Gangemi, was the only girl to tee it up in the 13-to-15 division and she made a par on the third hole on her way to a 58.
Taimoor Naseem of Sinking Spring was solid during the fall portion of the 2023 season and he finished it off with a 4-over 39 that bested the field of nine-holers and earned him his seventh win of the season. Naseem made birdies on the third and ninth holes and had two pars on his scorecard.
Probably fitting that Villanova’s twin Sokol brothers, Henry and Jack, both of whom were on coed 12-and-under division leaderboards throughout the year, shared runnerup honors as he each tallied an 8-over 43.
Henry Sokol opened his round with a birdie at the first hole and he also had a par at four. Jack Sokol made birdies at the sixth and eighth holes and had two pars on his card.
William Thorkelson of Bryn Mawr took fourth place with a 45, Steven Musacchio of Glenmoore was fifth with a 46, Baylor Keim of Blue Bell was sixth with a 47 and Lucas Shank of West Chester was seventh with a 50.
Xunnan Dang of Newtown Square took eighth place with a 51, Jia Yan of Malvern was ninth with a 52 and Zheng Yan, another member of Malvern’s Team Yan, and Jaxson Refold of Bryn Mawr rounded out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division as they finished in a tie for 10th place, each registering a 54.
