There wasn’t much separating the top three teams in the Inter-Ac League this fall with The Haverford School claiming the title, Episcopal Academy earning runnerup honors and Malvern Prep right on the heels of the Churchmen in third place.
Malvern Prep got a little redemption Monday by claiming the team title in the Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association (PAISAA) Championship at Radley Run Country Club outside of West Chester.
The Inter-Ac dominated the meeting of private schools from around the state with the six Inter-Ac schools accounting for six of the top seven spots in the team standings in the 12-team field.
Malvern Prep was led by junior Michael Henry as the left-hander carded a solid 1-over-par 73 over the par-72 Radley Run layout to finish in second place in the individual standings, a shot behind the PAISAA individual champion, Mercersburg Academy senior Argyle Downes, who matched par with a 72.
Looks like teams were allowed to have six players with the top three scores counting.
Malvern Prep put together a 9-over 225 total to finish eight shots clear of runnerup Germantown Academy, which took second place with a 233 total.
The Patriots shared the PAISAA team crown with Haverford School a year ago at Brookside Country Club in Pottstown. Germantown Academy finished in fourth place in the Inter-Ac race this fall.
Mercersburg Academy, behind Downes, who is headed for Rutgers at the end of next summer, finished four shots behind GA in third place with a 237 total.
Only a shot separated defending PAISAA team co-champion Haverford School and Episcopal Academy as they finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively. The Fords finished with a 239 total and the Churchmen tallied a 240 total.
Penn Charter was three shots behind Episcopal in sixth place with a 243 total and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy was a shot behind the Quakers in seventh with a 244. It is a testament to the strength of the Inter-Ac that Springside Chestnut Hill was winless in the six invitationals that comprise the Inter-Ac regular season, but finished ahead of five teams in the PAISAA Championship.
The Hill School finished two shots behind Springside Chestnut Hill in eighth place with a 246 total with Kiski Prep another 10 shots behind the Blues in ninth place with a 256 total.
Mercersburg, Hill and Kiski tuned up for the PAISAA Championship with a tri-match at Stonewall’s Old Course, the Tom Doak gem located in East Nantmeal Township in northwest Chester County, on a summerlike late October Saturday.
The Shipley School finished in 10th place with a 277 total, Westtown School was 11th with a 307 total and Friends Central was a shot behind Westtown in 12th with a 308 total.
Backing up Henry for Malvern Prep was sophomore Davis Conaway, who finished in third place with 3-over 75.
Henry was the runnerup to Haverford School junior Gregor Weissenberger in last week’s Bert Linton Invitational, the Inter-Ac’s individual championship, at Aronimink Golf Club, the Donald Ross classic in Newtown Square.
Conaway, winner of the Bert Linton as a freshman a year ago, finished a shot behind Henry in a tie for third in last week’s Bert Linton at Aronimink.
Malvern Prep head coach Gary Duda could take his pick for a third counting score as junior Eamon Cochran and freshman Colby Komancheck each tallied a 5-over 77 and were among a group tied for 11th place. Komancheck made an impressive Bert Linton debut last week as he finished in fifth place at a tough Aronimink layout.
Rounding out the Malvern Prep lineup were junior Brody Bell, who carded an 84, and senior Shane Powelson, who signed for an 85.
Germantown Academy was led by senior Ajeet Bagga, who registered a 4-over 76 and finished in fourth place in the individual standings.
Senior Will Irons added a solid 5-over 77 for the Patriots and sophomore Lucas Albert was their final counter with an 80.
Rounding out the GA lineup were Carter Radomicki with an 84, Blair Mitchell with a 90 and Robert Leininger with a 91.
