Ryan Sun of Morganville, N.J. and Lower Merion sophomore Seiji Sako each battled their way through a line of rain showers to card a 4-over-par 72 at Bala Golf Club and share the top spot in the 13-to-15 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Sept. 17th.
Sun made birdies on the first, 12th and 16th holes and had eight pars on his scorecard on the tight, par-68 Bala layout nestled just inside Philadelphia’s border with Lower Merion. Sako made birdies on the first, 10th, 14th and 17th holes and had nine pars on his card. Sako had five of those pars on Bala’s incoming nine along with his three birdies as he went 2-under 33 on the back nine to finish strong.
It was a tuneup for the Central League Championship three days later at Turtle Creek Golf Course for Sako. Got a chance to watch Sako play a little while I was out there and he finished in a tie for eighth place with a 6-over 78 to earn himself a trip to the District One Class AAA Championship, which tees off Oct. 9 back at the Turtle.
Henry Belcher of Villanova made a birdie at the first hole and had 11 pars on his card, seven of them on the incoming nine at Bala, as he finished a shot behind Sun and Sako in third place with a 5-over 73.
Jaxon Piccoli of Berlin, N.J. and John Gavaghan of Ambler finished in a tie for fourth place, each posting an 81, Gabriel Abalos of Sewell, N.J. was sixth with an 82 and Mason Stephan of Collegeville was seventh with an 83.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division were three players tied for eighth place at 84, including Colin Burke of Wilmington, Del., Luke Matthews of Aston and Tyler Baritz of Blue Bell.
Ethan Legarda of Voorhees, N.J. made a birdie on the sixth hole and had 11 pars on his scorecard, including a run of seven straight pars from the ninth through the 15th holes, as he finished atop the leaderboard in a short field in the 16-to-18 division with a 7-over 75.
Jack Lairdieson of Newtown Square made a birdie on the fourth hole and had eight pars on his card as he finished a shot behind Legarda in second place with a 76. Josh Miller of Fort Washington had five pars on his card as he finished in third place with an 84.
Brandon Carrigan of Warrington rounded out the field in the 16-to-18 division as he finished in fourth place with a 92.
Gabrielle Hamstead of Milton, Del. was the only girl to complete play at Bala and she had five pars on her scorecard on her way to a 95 that gave her a Philly Junior Tour victory in the 13-to-15 division.
Rayan Shah of Newtown made a birdie on the sixth hole and had four pars on his scorecard, including three straight to finish his round, as he bested the field of nine-holers with a 4-over 37.
It was Shah’s 19th victory of the year in the coed 12-and-under division, a feat that is even more impressive considering just how competitive this group of nine-holers has been throughout 2023.
William Quartermain of Bryn Mawr had five pars on his card as he earned runnerup honors with a 5-over 38. Henry Sokol of Villanova made a birdie on the second hole and had three pars on his card as he finished a shot behind Quartermain in third place with a 39.
Ben Meixell of Wilmington, Del. took fourth place with a 40, Rithvik Nimma of Newtown was fifth with a 41, Xunnan Dang of Newtown Square was sixth with a 42 and Taimoor Naseem of Sinking Spring was seventh with a 43.
Ethan Meersman of Fort Washington took eighth place with a 44, Henry Sokol’s twin brother, Jack Sokol, was ninth with a 45 and Jacob Russell of Wilmington, Del. rounded out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division as he finished in 10th place with a 46.
