Led by sophomore Nicky Nemo, who matched par with a 35 at Huntingdon Valley Country Club, The Haverford School swept to victory as the Inter-Ac League’s regular season teed off Thursday with the Penn Charter Invitational.
Each of the six Inter-Ac schools will host an invitational mini-tournament.
Nicky Nemo was an individual co-medalist and helped the Fords put together a solid team total of 184, three shots better than defending Inter-Ac League champion Malvern Prep.
Haverford School has been a dominant force on the Inter-Ac golf scene over the years, but the Fords haven’t won the league title since taking a third straight crown in 2019. A young Haverford School team finished in third place behind runnerup Germantown Academy a year ago.
Backing up Nicky Nemo for Haverford School were junior Harrison Brown and sophomore Liam McFadden as they each recorded a solid 1-over 36. Junior J.P. Hoban finished two shots behind Brown and McFadden with a 3-over 38.
Haverford School could take its pick for its fifth counting score between junior Gregor Weissenberger and senior Alex Nemo as both registered a 4-over 39.
Malvern Prep was led by freshman Davis Conaway, who finished a shot behind Nicky Nemo and Episcopal Academy senior Hunter Stetson, the other co-medalist, with a 1-over 36.
Conaway is the reigning Inter-Ac individual champion as he claimed a dramatic victory in last fall’s Bert Linton Inter-Ac League individual championship at Llanerch Country Club.
Backing up Conaway for the Friars were junior Michael Henry and Brody Bell, both of whom contributed a 2-over 37.
Another freshman, Colby Komancheck, tallied a solid 3-over 38 for Malvern Prep and senior Marshall Kain was the final counter for the Friars with a 4-over 39.
Two days after the Penn Charter Invitational, Komancheck earned himself a ticket to the Drive, Chip & National Finals at Augusta National Golf Club by capturing the Boys 14-15 Division title in the regional competition at Aronimink Golf Club.
Komancheck is the son of the RiverCrest Golf Club & Preserve pro shop team of head pro Jamie Komancheck and Kelly Komancheck, the pro shop manager. Pretty sure Kelly Komancheck is also a PGA professional.
Stetson’s solid showing led Episcopal Academy to a third-place finish in the team standings as the Churchmen ended up seven shots behind Malvern Prep with a 194 total.
Germantown Academy finished in fourth place with a 211 total, host Penn Charter was a shot behind the Patriots in fifth with a 212 total and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy was four shots behind the Quakers in sixth with a 216 total.
Not sure there is a hotter scholastic golfer in this region right now than EA’s Stetson.
Stetson is coming off a really strong summer, highlighted by a run to the round of 16 in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at the Daniel Island Club’s Ralston Creek Course in Charleston, S.C.
Stetson bested a field of some of the top high school players in the region when he fired a sizzling 5-under 66 to claim individual honors in the inaugural Llanerch High School Invitational last month at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown.
It was at Llanerch last fall where Stetson finished in third place behind Conaway and Germantown Academy’s Ajeet Bagga in the Bert Linton Inter-Ac individual championship with a 4-over 75. Stetson was the defending champion in the Bert Linton at Llanerch, having won the title as a sophomore at Bluestone Country Club.
Stetson was the runnerup to Bagga in last fall’s individual points race compiled over the course of the league’s regular-season invitationals.
Round 2 of this year’s Inter-Ac League race will be Wednesday when Malvern Prep is the host at Waynesborough Country Club.
