With two of its three senior captains and a freshman matching par, Episcopal Academy announced its intention to contend for the Inter-Ac League crown Wednesday as the Churchmen swept the field in the second of the league’s six invitationals hosted by Malvern Prep at Waynesborough Country.
Senior tri-captain Hunter Stetson, one of the region’s top junior players during the summer, fellow tri-captain Jack Logan and freshman Liam Crowley each matched par with a 35 to help Episcopal post a 180 total.
That left the Churchmen two shots clear of reigning Inter-Ac champion Malvern Prep and perennial league power Haverford School. It was the first outright first-place finish for the Churchmen in an Inter-Ac invitational since 2019.
Episcopal has a veteran team and senior Jack Crowley checked in with a 37 to help the Churchmen pull out the 5-0 day. But Episcopal also got key contributions from its youngsters. In addition to the 35 recorded by Liam Crowley, freshman Carson Jakuc was the final counter for the Churchmen with a solid 38.
The medalist for the day was Malvern Prep freshman Davis Conaway, winner of the Bert Linton Inter-Ac individual championship a year ago at Llanerch Country Club, as he made birdies on the first, third and seventh holes at Waynesborough on his way to a 1-under 34 that led the Friars to a 182 total.
An interesting race for the regular-season individual points crown is shaping up between Conaway and Stetson, winner of the Bert Linton Inter-Ac title as a sophomore two years ago at Bluestone Country Club.
Junior Eamon Cochran matched par with a 35 to back up Conaway for the Friars. Senior Marshall Kain and junior Michael Henry each posted a solid 37 for Malvern Prep.
The Friars could take their pick for their final counter as both sophomore Pat Duda and freshman Colby Komancheck each posted a 38.
The Haverford School, coming off a sweep of the first Inter-Ac invitational hosted by Penn Charter at Huntingdon Valley Country Club last week, also landed on 182 to get a share of second place with Malvern Prep.
The Fords were led by senior Alex Nemo, another player who matched par with a 35. Alex Nemo’s younger brother Nicky, a sophomore, and fellow sophomore Sean Curran each came in with a solid 1-over 36.
Junior Harrison Brown tallied a solid 37 and another junior, Gregor Weissenberger, rounded out the scoring for The Haverford School with a 38.
There isn’t much to choose among the top three following the first two invitationals as The Haverford School stands at 8-1-1, Episcopal is right there at 8-2 and Malvern Prep is right behind the Fords and the Churchmen with a 7-2-1 mark.
Germantown Academy finished in fourth place at Waynesborough with a 197 total, Penn Charter was fifth at 204 and Springside Chestnut Hill was sixth with a 212 total.
