Strong showings by Dillman, Mazzalupi not enough as Philly Junior Tour stars fall to New Jersey in Pritsch Cup

Boyertown junior Chase Dillman and Radnor senior Shaun Mazzalupi are two of the top returning players in District One this season.

They capped their summer by representing the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour in some Ryder Cup-style matches against the top players from the New Jersey Section PGA Junior Tour in the 17th Jon M. Pritsch Cup, played Aug. 25th on the Philly Junior Tour’s home turf at Laurel Creek Country Club in Mt. Laurel, N.J.

In an otherwise disappointing day for the Philly Junior Tour stars, Dillman got a full point with a 3 and 2 victory in his singles match against New Jersey’s Ryan Powers of Mountain Lakes, N.J. and teamed with Mazzalupi, who has reached the PIAA Class AAA Championship the last two falls with the Raptors, to get a half in their four-ball match with Powers and Ryder Hodgson of Montclair, N.J.

The Jersey stars dominated the four-ball competition as New Jersey won that part of the competition, 5.5-.5. Dillman’s singles win was one of just three for the Philly Junior Tour team as New Jersey took the singles, 9-3. The overall tally saw New Jersey retain the Pritsch Cup by a 14.5-3.5 margin.

But there were no losers in this competition. The Philly Junior team of 10 guys and two girls were the top point-getters during a busy 2023 of tournament play. Just being one of the players selected to represent the Philly Junior Tour means you’re one of the better junior players in the Philadelphia region.

Hodgson got the other singles point for New Jersey in his group with a 5 and 3 victory over Mazzalupi.

Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J. picked up another full point for the Philly Junior Tour in his 2 and 1 victory over Lucas Hoffmeister of Westwood, N.J.

Hoffmeister and Sam Dolan of Basking Ridge, N.J. pulled out a 2 and 1 victory over the South Jersey pair of Forman and Luke Tappeiner of Northfield, N.J. Dolan gained the other full point out of that group with a 6 and 5 singles win over Tappeiner.

The Philly Junior Tour’s other singles point came from Downingtown West freshman Ian Larsen as he claimed a 5 and 4 decision over Ridhit Beri of Livingston, N.J.

Beri and Aaron Koo of Palisades, N.J. teamed to defeat Larsen and Lower Merion sophomore Seiji Sako, 3 and 2 in the four-ball match in that group and Koo picked up another full point for New Jersey with a 4 and 2 singles win over Sako.

The New Jersey pair of Jake Morgan of Roxbury, N.J. and Braden Bhalla of Ridgewood, N.J. pulled out a 1-up victory in their four-ball match with Archbishop Carroll senior Matthew Hurchalla and Malvern Prep freshman Colby Komancheck.

In the singles matches in that group, Morgan earned a 4 and 3 victory over Hurchalla and Bhalla claimed a 2 and 1 verdict over Komancheck.

Roger Rice of Chatham, N.J. and Jaisal Yadav of Princeton Junction, N.J. swept all three of the available points against Declan Conner of Swarthmore and Quinten Joiner of Millington, Md. Rice and Jadav earned a 5 and 3 decision in the four-ball match.

In the singles matches, Rice earned a 3 and 2 victory over Conner while Yadav cruised to a 6 and 5 decision over Joiner.

New Jersey’s female duo of Chloe Kim of Old Tappen, N.J. and Olivia Lee of Closter, N.J. won a 2 and 1 battle in its four-ball match with Carly Kuminka of Mickleton, N.J. and Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J.

In the singles matches, Kim captured a 7 and 6 victory over Kuminka while Liu took Lee to the 18th hole before suffering a 2-up setback.

The Pritsch Cup is played in memory of Jon M. Pritsch, who was one of the top junior players in the country when he died tragically in 1991 at the age of 17.

The Jon M. Pritsch Memorial Fund has raised more than $200,000 and more than 100 scholarships have been awarded to youngsters who plan to pursue a career in a golf-related field.
