Ryan Sun of Morganville, N.J., playing in a 13-to-15 division that drew a big field of competitors, got it going on the outgoing nine at Bala Golf Club in Philadelphia on a summery September Sunday as he recorded the best score of the day, a 2-over-par 70, to claim a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour victory.
Sun made back-to-back birdies at the second and third holes and then rattled off six straight pars to close out a front nine of 1-under 32. Sun added a third birdie at the 16th hole and ended up with 11 pars on his scorecard on the short, but testy par-68 Bala layout.
Luke Daniels of Devon made a birdie at the 18th hole and had 10 pars on his card in a steady round of 6-over 74 that left him four shots behind Sun in second place.
Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. and Ben Mayer of Garnet Valley finished a shot behind Daniels in a tie for third place, each signing for a 75. Sieben made birdies at the eighth and 10th holes and had 10 pars on his card, finishing out his round with four straight pars. Mayer made a birdie at the 16th hole and had nine pars on his card.
Boyertown sophomore Chase Dillman, Paul Reilly of West Creek, N.J. and Seiji Sako of Wynnewood finished in a tie for fifth place, each landing on 78.
Luke LaScala of Wilmington, Del. and Harrison Brown of Villanova finished in a tie for eighth place, each posting an 82.
Rounding out the top 10 in the 13-to-15 division were Daniel Rozinsky of Newtown and Liam Crowley of Wayne, both of whom carded an 83 to finish in a tie for 10th place.
Malvern Prep junior Marshall Kain made birdies at the second, sixth and 15th holes and had nine pars on his scorecard as he finished atop the leaderboard in the 16-to-18 division with a 5-over 73.
Joey Carr of Ambler had a steady round of 78 that featured 11 pars as he finished five shots behind Kain in second place with a 78. Michael Chotiner of Harrisburg made a birdie at the 13th hole and had five of his six pars on Bala’s incoming nine as he finished in third place with an 81. Chotiner put together a 2-over 37 on the back nine.
Justin Forman of Sewell, N.J. took fourth place with an 82, Evan Ramos of Absecon, N.J. was fifth with an 85, Jack Swalley of Ardmore was sixth with an 86 and J.P. Devinney of Morton was seventh with an 87.
Michael Fisher of Philadelphia took eighth place with a 91 and Aidan Riley of Pennsauken, N.J. rounded out the field in the 16-to-18 division as he finished ninth with a 99.
The best score among the girls also emerged from the 13-to-15 division as Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J. claimed another Philly Junior Tour victory with a solid 78. Liu, whose game has been improving all summer, made a birdie at the sixth hole and had seven pars on her scorecard.
Danielle Higbee of Mickleton, N.J. made a birdie at the 15th hole and had eight pars on her card as she earned runnerup honors with an 82. Freja Jensen of Solebury had five pars on her card as she finished in third place with a 101.
Mariana Walker of Richboro took fourth place with a 108 and Rylee Delaney of West Deptford, N.J. rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division as she finished fifth with a 113.
Jiayin Ou of Pottstown was the lone entry in the 16-to-18 division and she made pars on the 12th and 16th holes on her way to a 90.
William Thorkelson of Bryn Mawr made a birdie at the sixth hole and had four pars on his scorecard as he bested a competitive bunch of nine-holers with a 5-over 38.
Villanova’s Team Sokol, Jack and Henry (both Class of 2029, so possibly twins), went 2-3, respectively. Jack Sokol had four pars as he posted a 41 to earn runnerup honors and Henry Sokol made a birdie at the fourth hole and had four pars on his card as he finished in third place with a 42.
Kieran Shaw of Downingtown took fourth place with a 43, Chloe Donohue of Moorestown, N.J. and Sebastian Meyer of Scranton shared fifth, each recording a 45, Jack Forstein of Moorestown, N.J. and Justin Stickel of Churchville shared seventh, each landing on 47 and Noah Gates of Ardmore finished alone in ninth with a 51.
Rounding out the top 10 in the coed 12-and-under division were three players tied for 10th place with 55s, including James Gannon of Doylestown, Xunnan Dang of Newtown Square ad Anthony Beach of Westville, N.J.
