Ramsey, Martin, Sieben lead the way for Philly Junior Tour, but New Jersey claims 12-6 Pritsch Cup win

Cedar Crest freshman Dylan Ramsey earned a pair of points and La Salle junior Ethan Martin and Trevor Sieben of Medford, N.J. each picked up a point-and-a-half to lead the way for the group representing the Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour in its 12-6 loss to the New Jersey Section Junior Tour stars in the annual renewal of the Jon M. Pritsch Cup Aug. 26th at Spring Brook Country Club in Morristown, N.J.

It was the third straight Pritsch Cup victory for the host New Jersey team. The Pritsch Cup is presented by Under Armour.

Ramsey claimed a 3 and 1 victory over Harry Cohen in singles play, one of four outright wins for the Philly Junior Tour gang in singles. New Jersey had a 7.5-4.5 advantage in singles play.

Ramsey then teamed with Springfield senior Danny Flaherty, the reigning Central League individual champion, to earn the Philly Junior Tour team’s only full point in the four-ball matches as they pulled out a 2 and 1 decision over Harry Cohen and Richie Reck. New Jersey had a 4.5-1.5 advantage in the four-ball matches.

Martin, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier at La Salle last fall, earned a hard-fought 1-up victory over Jack St. Ledger in his singles match. Martin, playing in his third Pritsch Cup, was coming off an impressive victory in the Philly Junior Tour Championship with a 1-over 71 at a tough Chester Valley Golf Club layout, capping a really strong spring and summer on the Junior Tour circuit.

Sieben, like Martin, pulled out a 1-up victory over Holden Schipper in their singles match. Martin and Sieben battled St. Ledger and Schipper to a draw in their four-ball match.

The Philly Junior Tour’s other full point in singles came from Radnor junior Shaun Mazzalupi, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall. Mazzalupi claimed a 2 and 1 victory over Felix Hoermer.

Quakertown junior Nick Joyce, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, earned a half-point in singles as he ended up in a tie with Avery Cohen.

A couple of Jersey girls, Anushka Sawant and Olivia Pak, completed a sweep of their Philly Junior Tour counterparts, Phoenixville junior Kate Roberts and Katherine Liu of Moorestown, N.J.

Sawant claimed a 4 and 2 verdict over Roberts, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier last fall, while Pak earned a 3 and 2 decision over Liu. Sawant and Pak then earned another full point for New Jersey with a 3 and 1 victory over Roberts and Liu in the four-ball match.

It was a tough day for Roberts and Liu at Spring Brook, but both their games improved over the course of the summer.

Devan Patel earned a full point for New Jersey with a 2 and 1 decision over Downingtown West senior Brady Manning. Patel and Avery Cohen teamed up for another full point in their 4 and 3 four-ball victory over Joyce and Manning.

Comack Meldrum rolled to a 9 and 7 victory over Bonner-Prendie senior Chris DiRita and teamed with Hoermer to pick up another full point for the Jersey boys with a 5 and 3 victory over the Delco duo of DiRita and Mazzalupi.

Reck earned a full point for New Jersey with a 3 and 2 victory over Flaherty in their singles match.

Alex Patel and Tinush Patil swept their Philly Junior Tour opponents, Boyertown sophomore Chase Dillman and Anthony Primo of Stroudsburg. Patel claimed a 5 and 4 verdict over Dillman and Tinush was a 3 and 2 winner over Proud in the two singles matches.

Patel and Patil then completed the sweep with a 3 and 2 victory in the four-ball match.

The Pritsch Cup is played in memory of Jon M. Pritsch, a talented junior player who died tragically in 1991 at age 17. The Jon M. Pritsch Memorial Fund has raised more than $200,000 and awarded more than 100 scholarships to juniors intending to pursue a career in a golf-related field.
