The Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour held the first of its Nine-Hole Series of events Friday at DuPont Country Club’s Montchanin Course near Wilmington, Del., a par-29 layout that includes seven par-3s and two par-4, just right for the coed 12-and-under division.
Trebor Melendez of Vineland, N.J. and Quinten Joiner of Millington, Md. each carded a 3-over par 32 to share the top spot.
Melendez had six pars on his scorecard, closing his round with four straight pars to get his share of medalist honors. Joiner made a birdie on the ninth hole to catch Melendez at the top of the leaderboard and also had four pars on his card.
Holden Sparks of Nazareth, Ian Rotto of Kennett Square and Ruben Yoon of Magnolia, Del. each signed for a 5-over 34 to finish in a tie for third place.
Sparks got off to a fast start with a birdie at the first hole and had three pars on his scorecard. Rotto made a birdie at the fifth hole and had three pars on his card. Yoon made a birdie at the seventh hole and had three pars on his card.
Dane Mohap of Nazareth and Ben Meixell of Wilmington, Del. shared sixth place, each landing on 35. Jackson Lane of Cinnaminson, N.J. and William Thorkelson of Bryn Mawr were another shot behind Mohap and Meixell in a tie for eighth place, each recording a 36.
Alex DiGiacinto made it three Nazareth players in the top 10 as he rounded out the top 10 by posting a 37 that left him alone in 10th place. Sparks, Mohap and DiGiacinto have been making regular appearances on the leaderboard in the coed 12-and-under division this season.
