Matthew Hurchalla of Wallingford put together a steady 1-over-par 72 at Southmore Golf Course in Bath to capture the top spot in the 16-to-18 division in a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop Thursday.
Hurchalla made birdies at the first, seventh and 10th holes and had 11 pars on his scorecard on his way to the victory. Hurchalla had to be good because Derek Johnson of Mountain Top was right on his heels, claiming runnerup honors with a 2-over 73.
Johnson made birdies at the fourth, ninth and 13th holes and had 10 pars on his card. Hurchalla and Johnson both registered an even-par 36 on Southmore’s outgoing nine.
Recent Central Dauphin graduate Jake Shmonov, a PIAA Class AAA qualifier at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York County last fall, made birdies at the sixth and 13th holes and had 12 pars on his card as he finished a shot behind Johnson in third place with a 3-over 74.
Charles Ota of Blue Bell and Alex Nemo of Bryn Mawr shared fourth place, each landing on 76, David Cronan of Penn Valley took sixth with a 79 and Michael Fisher of Philadelphia and Aiden Greenberg of Nazareth finished in a tie for seventh, each signing for an 80.
Liam Gamble of Line Lexington took ninth place with an 81 and Jacob Dommel of Telford rounded out the top 10 in the 16-to-18 division as he finished alone in 10th place with an 82.
Anderson Brexler of Doylestown made a birdie at the third hole and then went back-to-back with birdies at 12 and 13 and had seven pars on his scorecard to claim top honors in the 13-to-15 division with a 9-over 80.
Nicky Nemo of Bryn Mawr’s Team Nemo made a birdie at the 14th hole and had seven pars on his card as he matched Brexler’s 80, but lost out for the top spot in a scorecard tiebreaker.
Colton Orris of Hershey made birdies at the fourth and sixth holes and had six pars on his card as he bested William Forman of Wayne in a tiebreaker to capture third place as each recorded an 81. Forman matched Orris’ birdie at the sixth hole and had nine pars on his card.
Strath Haven sophomore Matt Caputo took fifth place with an 85, Trey Barkman of West Chester was sixth with an 86, Benjamin Robbins of Holland was seventh with an 88 and Keegan Redmond of Hummelstown was eighth with a 90.
Luke Daniels of Devon landed in ninth place with a 91 and Reid Wilson of Kennett Square rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division as he finished alone in 10th place with a 93.
Hannah Puc of Marlton, N.J. continued her strong season as she made birdies at the 14th and 16th holes and had seven pars on her scorecard to earn a victory in the girls 16-to-18 division with an 80. It was Puc’s fourth Philly Junior Tour win in 2022.
Cierra Griffith of Pottstown took runnerup honors with a 91 that featured five pars. Sarah Lawrie of Eagleville rounded out the 16-to-18 division as she had five pars on her card on her way to a 94 that left her in third place.
Sophia Branca of Warrington had three pars on her way to a 95 that landed her atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division.
Reagan Wilson of Kennett Square rounded out the field in the 13-to-15 division as she was the runnerup with a 105 that featured a par on the 17th hole.
It was a short field of nine-holers that included three players from Nazareth who have been playing well all season and weren’t far from home at Southmore.
Dane Mohap bested his fellow Nazareth guys as he made six pars, including four straight to finish up his round, as he posted a 3-over 39.
Holden Sparks had four pars on his way to runnerup honors with a 43. Alex DiGiacinto rounded out the field in the coed 12-and-under division as he took third place with a 45 that was highlighted by a birdie at the eighth hole and two pars.
