This is about a week old and I’m not usually attempting to report the results of individual Central League dual matches, but … hey, it’s 2020 and there have been a ton of unusual things happening this year.
Garnet Valley teed it up against Ridley on Ridley’s home course of Springfield Country Club last week. Just the fact that the Central League teams are playing dual matches is a good thing. The fact that the league couldn’t put together a District One qualifier in time to get its kids into the postseason, that’s a whole different issue.
I’m still asking around, but it sounds like the Central League is trying to put together a Central League individual championship for Monday. It’s a nice idea, but since I just drove up to the Heritage Hills Golf Resort in Springettsbury Township, York County Tuesday for a PIAA Class AAA Championship played without any Central League golfers, you’d have to say the championship is a little late.
Looped for Dave Woods in The Bull, Stonewall’s Member-Guest or Partner-Guest in the parlance of the ’Wall, a few weeks ago and we talked a lot about Delco sports. I always enjoy looping for Delco guys at Stonewall because, hey, I speak Delco. I grew up there and worked in the sports department of the Daily Times for 20 years.
When Woods, a pretty nice player who plays out of Concord Country Club, returned two Sundays ago, he promised he’d send a roundup of a Garnet Valley match since his son, Nicklaus Woods, Nicklaus Palmer Woods to be more precise, has been the Jaguars’ best player since matches resumed after it looked for a long time like there would be no season or maybe golf would be played in the spring.
This isn’t really to dump on anybody because it has been a year filled with difficult choices and with options that were either bad or worse.
Nicklaus Woods fires a 38 for Garnet Valley |
Nicklaus Woods was indeed Garnet Valley’s best player, firing a 38 at Springfield to lead the Jaguars to a 200-226 victory. Nicklaus Woods is a junior and his dad says he’s just starting to figure out the game after mostly being a baseball player as a youngster.
Backing up Nicklaus Woods for Garnet Valley were Matt Pulcinella with a 39, Braden Rogers with a 40 and Bradyn Cantwell with a 41.
It became apparent pretty early in this pandemic that golf was one of the few things you could do safely. I’m glad Nicklaus Woods and his Garnet Valley teammates are getting out and playing some matches.
It’s a shame that golf got lumped into the category of “fall sports,” which really means football, when school boards and administrators started to consider whether it was safe to play high school sports this fall. Ultimately, I think that’s the main reason Conestoga senior Morgan Lofland didn’t get a chance to become a three-time PIAA qualifier and why Lower Merion sophomore Sydney Yermish didn’t get a chance to defend her District One Class AAA championship.
Yeah, it’s a little bit of a golf-centric viewpoint, but
this is a golf blog. A few golf things fell through the rather large cracks
that the coronavirus pandemic opened up in our world this year. I just wish
Central League golfers competing at districts wasn’t one of them.
