Their PIAA postseason hopes having come to an end in last week’s District One Class AAA Championship, Downingtown East teammates Dylan Gute and Jake Leon went 1-2, respectively, in the 16-to-18 division of a Philadelphia Section PGA Junior Tour stop at Crossgate Golf Club in Millersville Sunday.
Gute, a senior, was particularly impressive in claiming the top spot with a 2-over-par 74. After dropping to 3-over with bogeys at the third, fourth and sixth holes, Gute rattled off 11 pars and a birdie at the 12th hole the rest of the way to capture the victory.
Gute had put himself in position for a ticket to the PIAA Championship with an opening-round 74 in the district tournament at Turtle Creek Golf Club, but struggled to an 83 in the final round and failed to advance.
It was an even more frustrating finish at the Turtle for Leon, a junior, as he was one of three players eliminated in a playoff for the 12th and final berth to the state tournament out of the District One Championship. He had battled back from an opening-round 78 with a solid 1-over 73 before coming up short in the playoff.
Leon had a birdie on the ninth hole at Crossgate on his way to a 4-over 76 that left him two shots behind Gute in second place.
At least Gute and Leon got a chance to tee it up at districts. Strath Haven senior Jackson Debusschere and younger brother Tyler, a sophomore, had their postseason stopped before it ever got started as concerns over the coronavirus pandemic in the Central League left the league unable to stage a District One qualifier. The league is playing dual matches and will crown a league champion, but the postseason for teams and individuals won’t happen.
The brothers had kept their games sharp with some solid showings on the Philly Junior Tour and that continued Sunday at Crossgate. Jackson Debusschere had five birdies on his scorecard as he finished alone in third place, a shot behind Leon with a 77.
Tyler Debusschere had four birdies on his way to an 80 that left him atop the leaderboard in the 13-to-15 division.
Rounding out the 16-to-18 division, Luke Thompson of Huntingdon finished a shot behind Jackson Debusschere in fourth place with a 78, Oxford senior Joe Madden was fifth with a 79, Corey Anderson of Media was sixth with an 81 and William Gronlund of Lewisburg and Joshua Murphy of Newtown Square shared seventh, each posting an 87.
:Leighton Smitwick of Boalsburg finished with three straight pars as he registered an 81 to earn runnerup honors in the 13-to-15 division, a shot behind Tyler Debusschere. Maxwell Wager of State College also made pars at the last three holes to finish in third place with an 84.
Malvern Prep seventh-grader Davis Conaway, an East Bradford resident who dominated the coed 12-and-under division during the wraparound 2019-2020 season, moved up to the 13-to-15 division and finished in a tie for fourth place with Jesse Shue of Columbia, each signing for an 85.
Joseph Sabol of State College finished alone in sixth place with a 92 and Drew Clark of Kennett Square and Colton Orris of Hershey rounded out the 13-to-15 field as each carded a 92 to end up in a tie for seventh place.
The best score of the day among the girls who teed it up at Crossgate came from the younger 13-to-15 division as Elle Overly of Lititz had three birdies, one on the front nine and two on the back, in an impressive 5-over 77 that gave her the top spot.
Reagan Garnsey of Dover, Del. birdied the second hole to earn runnerup honors with an 88. Kylie Yiengst of Wyoming, Del. birdied the ninth hole to take third place with a 95. Olivia Kury of York rounded out the 13-to-15 field as she finished in fourth place with a 107.
Emma Schotsch, a senior at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, birdied the 18th hole as she posted an 86 to claim a victory in the 16-to-18 division.
West Chester Rustin senior Mary Emma Guldi had five pars on her scorecard as she earned runnerup honors with a 90. Carly Gavant of Hoboken, N.J., who also finished up with a birdie at the 18th hole, rounded out the 13-to-15 division field as she took third place with a 106.
Ian Rotto of Kennett Square birdied the second hole on his way to a 4-over 40 as he bested the field of nine-holers with a 4-over 40. Ia Larsen of Glenmoore had two birdies and was even-par for his last five holes as he finished a shot behind Rotto in second place with a 5-over 41. It completed a solid weekend for Larsen, who was also the runnerup in the coed 12-and-under division in Saturday’s Philly Junior Tour stop at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort.
Benjamin Mayer of Garnet Valley took third place with a 42 and a couple of York guys, Callahan Harrell and Lawson Leeper, were next on the leaderboard as Harrell finished fourth with a 44 and Leeper was fifth with a 45.
Thomas Carpenter of Bristol finished in sixth place with a 52, Saleem Kazmi of Moorestown, N.J. was seventh with a 55 and Sophia Enriquez of York rounded out the coed 12-and-under field as she ended up in eighth place with a 58.
